Topic: Any Dog Show Fans?

Tonight and tomorrow night the annual Westminster Kennel Club dog show from Madison Square Gardens.  It's on USA Network.

My wife and I watch this every year.  We've tended to have "pound save" dogs as pets over the years, but it is fun to watch the pure breed's strut their stuff.

Love the Westminster! Also love the movie Best in Show - hysterical!

Re: Any Dog Show Fans?

I also love the Westminster show. As the owner of a pure bred Newfoundland (he's my 4th) I have a bit of a bias towards the larger breeds, but enjoy watching all of them strut around.

Funny enough, I was thinking about starting a new thread to showcase all our dogs. For instance, mine is a 4 y.o. Grey Newfie. Bought at him at 10 weeks old from a local breeder after I had to put my last one down. There's a chore I absolutely dread. At any rate, he's about 170lbs and named Truman. He's definately a family member and knows it! I'll post pictures soon. I'd like to see everyone else's "family" as well.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

That's a great idea, Guido. I don't have any pets of my own but would love to see everybody elses. smile

Re: Any Dog Show Fans?

We had a "pound save" mut that lived with us for 14 years.  We had to put her down two years ago and it was so hard, we haven't worked up the nerve to get another one.

As for pure breeds, my wife and I like Weimaraner's.

Re: Any Dog Show Fans?

Best thing is to get another one. We have one last Yorkie from a line the wife bred and sold as a hobby while the kids were around. We've lost one a year for the last 5. Love to watch the dog show at WKC.

Re: Any Dog Show Fans?

Never miss it!  The wife is a dog trainer and we are currently living with #3 & #4 German Shepherds.  Our first two (now in Heaven) were in the movie, American Ganster and my wife got to direct Denzel Washington for four days while he was filming with our dogs'.  He is a really nice guy.

In fact the handler, Jimmy Moses won (or should I say the dog won) the Herding Group last night with a German Shepherd that is from our line, although a long way off.

We compete in Schutzhund events so if any of you attend one on the east coast please let me know.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

cool that some of your dogs were in show biz. One of our Yorkies ended up as  a pro rodeo clown's support act. He trained him to hide in a place in the oversized pants, then jump out and nip at the bull's heels on command. lol He'd stop the bull in its tracks. One of our bigger ones at about 5 pounds. A yorkie is fearless being a true terrier and way too fast for a bull to get at. The wife dabbled in showing but it was too much with the kids and stuff. We had a good line. Ch. Rolls Royce Corniche, source of the particolored line. We had a few parti's in our pups but that was before they were accepted by AKC so we sold them as pets only with no papers. Now they're all the rage. Since you are into dogs, I'll include a link to the parti line. Ms. Lipman, the source of our line, was  a good friend, and our kennel was shut down as well as the listed ones during the dna research which led to the classification. http://www.partiyorkshireterrierclub.co … istory.htm

Can we talk about cats, too?  I have a beautiful Maine Coon kitten - she will probably be bigger than Rick's Yorkie when she is done growing!

Ha ha. Our two Persian cats are both bigger than our Yorkie. He's still the boss though. Maine Coon cats are beautiful.

Ummmm.........

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Any Dog Show Fans?

Here's some pix of my big guy. Sad to say, but Truman couldn't act his way out of the backyard. We love him anyway.

Re: Any Dog Show Fans?

We always watch Westminster...we are watching right now. Sully has a cold so Valentines is being celebrated on the couch looking at beautiful dogs.

Anyway, we are fond of the Greyhounds since we rescued 3 from the track.
However, AKC Greyhounds & racing Greyhounds are built a little different.

fast dogs, fast cars & fast guitars players ;-)

Re: Any Dog Show Fans?

We enjoyed watching the show. We had a Peke once. Nasty little dog. She'd snap at your hand sometimes if she had a treat she was guarding. I liked the Malamute, he had great movement and carriage.

Is Truman tied to the truck or pulling the truck!

Re: Any Dog Show Fans?

Didn't stay up till the end to see Best In Show, but none of my favorites were in the running anyway.

I really liked the Bluetick Coonhound from the first night and I thought the Pointer from last night was an amazing dog.

I would have voted the Bluetick, but then again, I saw quite a few growing up in the South so I guess I'm partial.

Re: Any Dog Show Fans?

The "Bow Wow" Bowl is a tradition among my group of lady friends. The first night none of my favorites won. Last night was better. I've had three Dobies, sweetest dogs on the planet. So, you know who I was rooting for. I'm sorry, but the Peke was my least favorite and it was a let down IMHO. The Shephard, the Dobie, even the Dalmation would have made me happy. Oh well, I'm no expert and I enjoyed the show. I did have to fight the urge to go to the pound and rescue a pup. lol  Quiet house since the cat and dog died. sad    Cathy

We got the truck stuck down by the river (I think I've heard that tune somewhere) and had to have him pull it out! J K! Actually tho', Newfoundlands are bred for water rescue and can pull a 2,000 lb boat through the water with their teeth. They've also been trained to jump out of Coast Guard helicopters while hovering 20-30 ft above the water to rescue someone. Above all that, they really are gentle giants.
