Topic: Tommy Castro Shake up

As of Feb. 1st Keith Crossan(sax), Tom Poole(trumpet), Tony Stead(keyboards), and Scot Sutherland(bass) will no longer be members of The Tommy Castro Band. First news I got was Scot was leaving to get back to Des Moines to be back with his family, as moving them to Ca. wasn't do-able. The news that the horn section is leaving is quite a shock though. Original bass player Randy McDonald is returning and possibly drummer Byron Cage will remain. The new look TCB will take the stage after Jan.'s Blues Cruise. I'm a bit shocked by all this as I'm sure most of his staunch following are too.

Re: Tommy Castro Shake up

Damn... I really liked the line up, but I get the whole Scot thing.  TC posted this part of the story on his FB page.

The Keith & Tom departure really hurts.  Those two guys alone were worth the ticket price to a TCB show.  Tommy said he'll tell the horn section story soon so I'll just keep looking on FB for the info.  Damn fine musicians that will leave some big shoes to fill.

Re: Tommy Castro Shake up

Sorry, shoulda mentioned to check Scot's & Tommy's Facebook Wall for the details. Karen & I & Scot's cousin Mindee are goin' NYE to see them one more time.

Re: Tommy Castro Shake up

Just got a blast from Tommy's feed.
INTRODUCING TOMMY CASTRO & THE PAINKILLERS

The TCB, now Tommy Castro and the Painkillers, welcomes back Randy MacDonald from a five year hiatus.  Randy was the original bass player for the Tommy Castro Band and was "a really big part of the Tommy Castro Band sound" (Tommy).  Along with Randy's return as bass player, and Byron Cage's continued performance on drums, the TCB also welcomes new keyboard player, James Pace, to the band.  James has shared the stage with B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Los Lobos, Los Lonely Boys, Rodney Jones, Wayne Krantz (of Steely Dan), Janiva Magness, Blues Travelers, John Popper and many others.

You can read more about all members of the band on the Tommy Castro Band website. http://tommycastro.com/site/?page_id=18

He and the new band are at Belly Up a week from today. I'm going to check it out. Hey Rockfarmer, Not too far down the road.

Re: Tommy Castro Shake up

Well, I trashed Tommy after hearing him and the Painkillers 2 gigs into their new scene a while back when Tommy had a musicians nightmare onstage with a bad rig and ensuing disaster at the above gig, for which he apologized to me.

I take it all back and will happily eat my words. I and some fellow Joe adherents caught Tommy and the Painkillers at the local and fairly small fest yesterday. He had just flown cross-country with the band after playing Virginia Beach the day before, and said they'd had 4 hours of sleep. Well... They killed it! He had the crowd eating out of his hand and played a demanded encore, running into the closer's time by acclaim. I shot the whole set from the rail and will be putting up links when I have it processed and uploaded to my channel. He looked right at me midway and gave a "whatdoyasaynow" look. I say BRING IT!

Tommy also noted his new release The Devil You Know, has JoeB and Tab Benoit sitting in on cuts.
Heeeees Back and I for one am a happy camper. Two fellow JoeB fans who had never seen Tommy before were stunned they'd had him under their radar for so long.

Yeah Rick, the new version has gel'd and its like the TCB I used to see many moons ago. I saw Tom Poole play with a friend of mines band East Bay Mudd at a final community concert last night. We just talk about current events and this years tomato crops. Discussing Tommy gets Poole's BP up, its all old news now anyhow. Love the cover of I'm Tired a la Savoy Brown that Joe & Tommy play together. Saw Tommy back in April when I won tix answering his trivia question on FB which included a red vinyl copy of The Devil In Me. Still love TC's act!
