I find his sales technique interesting. The entire website tells you how stupid you are if you don't use "optimized" strings. I am feeling pretty dumb right now, but just not feeling like I should get my credit card out. smile

Another Ed Roman for sure!

I had the same feeling. Even if his strings are wonderful, he won't get any of my money!

Sound acoustically louder on my Les Paul..for some reason. Personally, I didn't notice much difference on the 'feel' and the bends when put against Ernie Balls, but they are more alive than say..the Elixir electric sets. I think they are worth the money alone as strings even if you don't notice the immediate change.

ok so i dropped $30 and got 5 sets of ZOG strings. We will see if they're any good. interesting to test the difference in "tension" on the strings and us a timer for sustain. If they're really good I don't mind giving my money to some who simply doesn't know how to market himself properly wink

btw R.I.P Ed Roman

Re: The case against heavy strings

i use mostly 9's but do have a couple of guitars with 10's and my EJ strat is setup with 8's.

Re: The case against heavy strings

I have 11s on my LP and strat.

I just prefer the strings to move around less and overbend light strings - but I am a rock climber and I have slowly moved up from 8s back when I was a teenager.

I find the gauge feels the same on the LP and strat but my strat has a fully floating trem and I think this means they feel a little softer than a hardtail would.

Re: The case against heavy strings

I think I prefer to stay an idiot and go look at quilt tops on the PRS site.

I got a set. They are dirt cheap. Personally, I have no idea what he is on about with any of his products. I think he is insane. His playing on youtube is dreadful.
Just give me SuperSlinkys and I'm okay.

Re: The case against heavy strings

See, if he had a professional site and manner...then I had linked it - he would have sold around fifty sets altogether! Haha.
Maybe not...
This is him apparently...playing his own guitar, with his own pedal, amp and strings.

WOW! I just don't know what else to say...

Re: The case against heavy strings

Hendrix note for note and a couple more for good optimization!

Re: The case against heavy strings

I like 9's on my Gibsons. And Dunlop Gator 71mm picks.
I play hard and bend a lot.
And I'm constantly working on real fast runs. The lighter strings/pick help me be smoother.

Perhaps I would be good enough for one of those guitars afterall...

Re: The case against heavy strings

You guys bought strings from THAT dude?

Re: The case against heavy strings

Cost me five bucks. Even if he turns out to be a liar and a cheat. Which he most certainly is.

I've had far worse in the past. Promises from big companies about products. Snake oil 75% of the time.

Re: The case against heavy strings

I'm kinda late in on the debate guys, but I thought I might as well add my story.  Having been a Fender Strat player for many years, I always went for 9's and mostly 9-46.  I really liked and got used to Fender Bullets on the Strat and usually put EB's on my Tele and other guitars.  I guess in a way I was a bit too nervous to try anything different.

Then I bought the JB LP Studio, got listening to Joe and more importantly what he said and my musical world started to change.  It was just about 6-7 months ago after the guitar arrived that I first put a new set of 10's on my LP and reverse wound over the tailstop.  Playing it for the 1st time was truly amazing - not only am I more into the 10's, but it's taken me away from my over dependance on my old workhorse Strat.  I now have the confidence to try out other guitars and indeed bought a lovely Gibson Explorer Pro (which plays like a dream) not so long back.  I now desperately want a '59 LP re-issue, preferably a plain top with a Bigsby...it'll come somehow!

Gibson LP '89 Custom * Gibson LP '04 Classic * Gibson JB LP Studio * Fender 50th Ann. Deluxe Strat * Gibson Explorer Pro * Epiphone Korina SG * Michael Kelly Patriot Premium * Ibanez 105NT Artcore Custom * Takamine acoustics * Fender Blues Deville 4x10" * Marshall DSL100 and DSL50 * Marshall 1960A * Laney LH55 * Bugera V55HD * Bugera 212VT * Marshall 1912 * Roland Cube 60

Re: The case against heavy strings

UPDATE!

Installed the ZOG "10+" strings on my '72 black beauty. sounds really good so far, and string bending does feel a little different. Haven't played enough on it to explain. Going to wait until placebo is over and then compare it to Ernieball and D'Addario strings on my other les pauls.

verdict so far, $5 per string set and I don't think I got ripped off.

This was my opinion.
I still think the strings are fine...and actually maybe a bit longer lasting and brighter than my EB.

Too small a difference to notice though...
