I've heard of using epoxy every little bit when winding too.. but then you can never take the pickup apart, you'd have to tear it apart and rewind the entire thing. at least with wax you can heat it up and remove coils
aside from painting krylon, you can dip it in sanding sealer for a while until the bubbles stop coming out. I might try vacuum potting my next set of pickups this way. The Deft sanding sealer from Lowes dries in 30 minutes (dry enough for 2nd application anyway)
