Re: Coconut Oil...

Robin - these days mice can have human cells somehow or other bred into them so that when they test them and study diseases they are actually seeing the results of a disease or a drug on human cells.  It would be nice if more money was spent on prevention, but no matter how well people take care of themselves stuff still happens, and when it does it is nice to have some options to  treat the problem.  Sometimes they can't figure out how to prevent something until they figure out what causes it, and in the case of cancers there are so many different causes that sometimes it is just not possible to rely only on prevention, and many times several different treatments are needed.  Fortunately many medical providers are learning to treat the whole person to help alleviate or cure these progressive diseases.  Every little bit helps someone.

Re: Coconut Oil...

My Dad is suffering from dementia so I was pretty excited to see this therapy. I don't like seeing him have to take oodles of pills every day that don't seem to be helping at all. I'm starting him on coconut oil right away 'cuz it can't be any worse for him than everything else he's on. Thanks Bluesman for posting this and I'll report back later if there's any improvement.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Hey Shreddy,

No, just a lack of quality "OH MY GOODNESS" E-mails and I know how much you demand quality! wink

I know how hard it is Dave when someone you love suffers from this disease. When I was young we lived two doors from my Grandma and Grandpa's home and so, I spent a lot of time with my Grandma who was from the old country. We would sit and have coffee with lots of cream in it, she would give me mint candies but always would tell me, "Don't tell your mother I gave you this!", and she would always give me the top cream off the milk that they had delivered daily. We talked about everything and she had a home garden that anyone would be proud of. Well, after Alzheimer's got a hold of her, she didn't know anyone. Actually, I'm not even sure she knew who she was and this sweet little lady's personality totally changed. Eventually, the disease ended her life. A very sad way to end an existence that was filled with life experiences and memories that all but disappeared before her death.

Re: Coconut Oil...

Roy,
This is very interesting and it goes along with some other things I've read.  I believe in traditional medicine, however in more recent years I think its good to think outside the box and incorporate traditional medicine and alternative medicine which is integrative medicine.

I discovered coconut oil a couple of years ago because one of my children gets eczema on his hands and has the most sensitive skin and the topical steroid creams give him a headache.  So, this oil is natural and when his hands get bad in the winter he wears these white cotton gloves at night with a layer of the coconut oil on them. I bought a couple containers and keep one in the kitchen and have experimented using the coconut oil in cooking. I think it tastes really good on steamed vegetables etc., but I really like coconut, the family didn't feel the same. This is the brand I buy, all coconut oil is NOT the same. I buy it locally in a jar about 5 inches high (25.5 oz or 128 oz) I didn't see that size here, but search it out if you are interested, I recommend this brand.

Some of the random things I read over the years, this one I wish I knew for sure if its true, because its disturbing.  One study found that the trend is up on Alzheimers and some feel it may be because the pharmaceutical companies are always lowering the magic safe number for cholesterol. The brain is mainly made of fat, therefore this study thinks the drug companies just want to sell more drugs, but its not in the best interest of the patient. On the flip side, Alzheimers could be on the rise, because the aging population is on the rise. I'm not claiming anything here, but that cholesterol number has moved down a couple times over the years, so I wonder if its now too low for some people and they could actually take less cholesterol medicine.

I know of 2 families with young children that experimented with very unconventional diets high in fat to alter the brain: one kid was autistic, the other epileptic.  The parents could not accept the epileptic diagnosis, the kid was under 10 years old.  They put him on a strict diet for over a year and he is cured, never took the seizure medicine again, he's in his mid-twenties now. (I wonder if this works better when the patient is really young?) This is another story very similar to this one I mentioned. http://www.cureepilepsy.org/psas/charlies_story.asp

This diet worked for the epileptic child I know of, but not the autistic child. I don't know if the autistic child followed this exactly or it was some other high fat type of diet, I remember he ate straight up mayonaisse.

I think the research is fascinating and when people get desperate and nothing else is working, I can see why they turn to something like coconut oil.

Re: Coconut Oil...

Thanks Angela! You know, the more the pharmaceutical companies come up with remedies, the more is found out about natural things in our lives that really help too. Remember for years they were saying coffee was bad for you? Now research, comparing coffee drinkers and non-drinkers, is showing that the drinkers are less likely to have type 2 diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and dementia in addition to having fewer cases of certain cancers, heart rhythm problems, and strokes. And remember the big margarine push over butter? Well, they found out it was much worse for you than butter. Crazy hey?

I guess the word is balance, no matter what you do, like or eat in life, is really the key.
