Topic: Stephen Stills 06/25/07 Review :)

Hey All,
Went and saw Stephen Stills last night and I have GREAT news to report.  The concert was absolutely wonderful....in other words he STILL (no pun intended) ROCKS.  Jim M, find a venue buddy and go!!!!!!  Here's the setlist:
Helplessly Hoping (what an opener....tears, oh yeah...)
Treetop Flyer (Love the guitar on this one)
      Different Man (Most excellent)
      Blind Fiddler
      Hearts Gate
Johnny's Garden (Told story of buying Ringo Starr's house, who bought from Peter Seller's,thru which they both inherited the gardener, who was the basis for Peter Seller's movie, Being There.)

      Cost of Freedom  (Awesome)
Suite Judy Blue Eyes (Double-Triple Awesome)  Sang same verse a couple of times and
chuckled, "Whoa, did ya' notice I sang that verse twice?"

     Southern Cross (Oh My!!)
     Isn't It About Time
     Make Love To You
Rocky Mountain Way (Absolutely KILLER GUITAR on this!!!!)
     Ole' Man Trouble
Love The One Your With (What else can I say...Simply Classic)
For What It's Worth  (To ABSOLUTELY DIE FOR)
WOODSTOCK  (Proof the REVOLUTION is still on...ROCKED THE HOUSE)
     Dark Star

He played some KILLER BLUES, he tromped on the effects pedal and I braced myself for the glorius rush that followed............and can he play keyboards............he conversed and joked with the audience alot, makes light of getting old, he's dropped weight and is looking good.  The man behind me said, I think you are quite a fan of Stephen's, would you like to take a good look thru the binoculars...oh yes.......and I was only in the 8th row, so seats were sweet anyway.......many, many standing ovations, much applause, much love thru the entire venue....hey, what else would you expect from a bunch of old hippies (lol).  And much to my delight, after the Encore, went down to the stage in my best "Deja Vu" shirt and got to hold hands with Stephen as he grinned at his "youthful self" on my shirt....just about sent me over the edge....well, it doesn't matter to me that everything wasn't perfect and he admits to not being able to hit all the notes, damn close though....it was GROOVY !!!!!
                                                                 pattyluvsjoe

P.S.  His drummer was Joe Vitale and bass player was Kenny Passarelli, organ player(can't remember his name) and I wish I could tell you what kind of guitars cause there were some real gems...........

Wow Patty, That was some setlist!! It makes me infinitely happy to read about such a great experience. It came to you because your "groovy", all about the love, vibe!! Keep smiling girlfriend and thanks for sharing!   Cathy

Re: Stephen Stills 06/25/07 Review :)

Short tour Patty St Louis was as close as he is coming to me. I haven't seen him solo since 95. He always has a good band. Could the B3 player have been Michael Finnigan? Great Setlist. Good to hear Shephen still rocks.

Jim, I am almost positive it wasn't Michael Finnigan....this fellow had darker curly hair with dark framed glasses, younger looking......I took notes, but I didn't catch his name......don't you just love the sound of a B3...I saw somewhere that Dave Mason is touring....always liked him, too...so many concerts...I could easily become a professional concert attendee (dang, if I could just win the lottery)

P.S.  I was eyeing Stephen's tour buses........

Always loved CSN (&Y). Remember seeing Stephen in the late 70's and he reprimanded the entire audience (20,000 plus at the Chicago Stadium) for clapping out of time ("If you people are gonna f****n clap, at least you could clap in time!!!). Great way to treat your fans! I'll give him the benefit of the doubt and assume that was chemically induced, but I never forgot it.
Oh yeah, if Dave Mason is touring, I am SO there. Love Dave Mason. In fact, I'm going directly back to that post about great guitar solos...need to add "Look at You, Look at Me"

"Rock ON & Keep the Faith"

Re: Stephen Stills 06/25/07 Review :)

Dear Patty, your review sent me off on some serious SS memories. So I just bought a ticket to see his show in a club I've been frequenting in Santa Cruz since '71. He's playin' the night before @ the Palace of Fine Arts in SF, but like I've said before, you can't beat a trip to Surf City!!!!! The show is on a Tue. night.

Someone needs to ban the use of any Tim Curry or facsimile image on this and any other website (other than the Rocky Horror site itself?

Yikes that is brutal punishment this early.....

Patty,

Sounds like a blast from the past...we grew up in such a fabulous time for great music.  Helplessly Hoping is beautiful!  Don't miss Dave Mason if he comes your way...turn  your piggy bank inside out...I've seen him twice recently, the man still sings and plays like time hasn't changed a thing.  If I'd known he was going to do some shows with John Mayall, I would have waited and seen that show.

Also, if you didn't catch Paul on Larry King, it is to replay on Friday.  Paul wasn't himself and he looks thin.  I think he is emotionally drained w/ the whole Heather ordeal and he needs some TLC and us to Hold His Hand...  tongue

Re: Stephen Stills 06/25/07 Review :)

I always have liked Stephen Stills too, wish I could have seen him. I did get a chance to see Crosby, Stills, and Nash at Jazzfest after dark in 2003 I think. They played at the Municipal Auditorium and it was awesome. They still sounded just as good as they did when they first got together. They played all of their old stuff and some of their individual songs too. Dave Mason, now there's a name I haven't heard for a long time. I saw him way back in the early 70's at one of the Summer Jams that we used to have at City Park in New Orleans. John Mayall has been around forever and I have a lot of his music. I saw him right after the album Jazz/Blues Fusion came out. I listened to him quite a bit because I used to play blues harp in a band in the mid 70's, but those days are long gone. I haven't played in years because I just can't seem to find the time anymore and I'm out of practice.

Re: Stephen Stills 06/25/07 Review :)

Patty-I live about 15 miles from Philly and a little more than an hour from Atlantic City.  We could meet in Vegas and see the Cirque One Beatle show...then after the show who knows, what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas. big_smile

Paul, Ringo, Olivia, Joe Walsh, Jeff Lynne, Orbison's wife and some others showed up at a Hollywood record store called Amoeba for a little performance by Paul for about 200 people the other night.  Wish I was there.

Well Patty I have to say my experience last night in Santa Cruz was a carbon copy set wise and the banter with the crowd was at times LMAO funny. Just before he broke into Cost of Freedom he unleashed his feelings on the war and the profiteering going on with it, to a rousing ovation and a larger cloud of the herb superb. He then dedicated the tune to those who gave all and those still in uniform, about the the most intense vibe I've felt at a concert in years. From this point on we sang every word to every song and Stephen remarked, "Hey now you guys know how hard it is to hit those notes." As far as the guitars went he played his big semi-acoustic, the white one which looked like a Gretch to me and alternated 2 Martins and 2 Fender Strats the rest of the night. Rocky Mtn. Way was a hoot, and an updated funkier version of For What It's Worth was very cool. There was a guy in his 30's standing next to me who kept prying me for dates of different songs, he was really diggin' it, but too young for the originals. I told him yeah you missed a great period in music history.......DUDE!

Re: Stephen Stills 06/25/07 Review :)

But wait Patty there's more. Did he mention reaching the Roseanne Barr level of trailer trash, since his youngest child is only 6 mos. older than his grandaughter? There was also a younger well endowed lady dancing Fillmore style on somebodies shoulders or a chair too close to the stage, Stephen couldn't resist leaning over and grabbin' a handful, much to her pleasure. As soon as the song ended he did grab her hand and kissed it and apologized. He mentioned this tour was too short and he was having so much fun that he was gonna try and make the next one longer. I will definitely be there next time. You don't get the full-on Stills when he's with CSN. A woman next to me said she was hopin' Neil Young or David Crosby would drift in from somewhere, I told her GEEZ I HOPE NOT!!! She couldn't process that at all, if you want to see them go see THEM. This was Stephen's turn to shine. Now if Chris Hillman dropped by, well that's a whole notha' story.

Heard 2 things on Sirius radio, but not confirmed.

Stills to be on Jay Leno tomorrow night. (Wed.)

Some may have heard this at Stephen's show...about the recording that hasn't been heard in years, may be streaming at his site or even coming out for sale.  Recorded after a Judy Collins track he participated on, Stephen paid the engineer to run the tape, he did some demos...Wooden Ships, etc. songs that ended up on the 1st album. It is streaming on his website and is available as his latest release. I don't recall if they had copies at the show I saw or not. I think I saw it on Amazon, take a look and see.
