Re: Aurora Borealis

A rare event in the UK. Some of the shots from Boreal Norway and other countries in the north were spectacular. Here's a link from Lapland. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4gRTI5bANA The solar cycle is in a peak now and more can be expected.

Re: Aurora Borealis

I had read earlier this week that we're going thru the most intense period of solar activity since 2005. This may also explain why some of you have had Internet issues.

Why don't we eliminate all the warning labels and let things sort themselves out?

Re: Aurora Borealis

The recent solar flare made the Northern Lights visible in some northern U.S. states, which is a rarity. Seeing the Aurora is on my bucket list.

Re: Aurora Borealis

Really been bummed out about having overcast skies in northern Wisconsin, I have been trying to see them the last 2 nights. I generally have a great view of them from my deck.

I don't know about other northern states, but here in Minnesota I wouldn't call it a rarity; occasional might be a better word. I have seen them on trips to the family cabin in NE Minnesota, but not as large or bright as those seen in the posted links. No matter how far you try to push the envelope, it remains stationery

Very cool. Looking at it from underneath is a view I never imagined.

Very cool video - I like the explanation of why the time lapse video.  Have you ever read the Golden Compass series (the books, forget the movie)?  The Aurora figures very prominently in these books - kind of gives it magical properties.  After watching this I can see why a person would think that.

Photographing this someday is on my bucket list.

Thanks for the heads up Lee, now I don't have to travel to the arctic to see it. Does it only occur in the winter months?

Winter has longer darkness, so more possible viewing hours. The north pole is tilted more towards the sun so it causes a better hit chance. Aurora Australis is the same thing on the south pole.  It needs a solar flare eruption to occur and be aimed at the earth, which can happen any time. The solar cycle is about 11 years and we are nearing the peak when more sunspots occur and magnetic storms in the sun cause mass ejections. Watch the NASA site that reports flares and have a plane ticket handy to head north. There is a couple of day lead time. Not every flare produces aurora as strong as the ones that just occurred. I'd love to see one myself.
