Topic: Joe at the Grand in Wausau!

Haven't been here in ages, so this may be old news.  I was thrilled as pie to be done with summer school and starting my vacation today.  Even more exciting was opening our new issue of Artsblock magazine and finding a page announcing a Joe performance, along with flattering comments from the great BB King.  This is definitely a step up from the Wis. bluesfest scene for Joe.  And so close to home for me!  The Grand Theater is a beautifully renovated opera house, and we have seen many a great show there.  A totally different scene from previous Joe shows I've attended, and a whole different audience for him to attract.  Very cool news.  Anybody in the north Wis. area planning to go?  Dino, you out there somewhere?  WXPR people?

Wow, could be an interesting week...HOB's Chicago, Pittman Theater Milwaukee, Oneida Casino, Wausau. I'm definitely seeing those first two shows and may need to contemplate a bit more traveling!

I'm trying to convince the hubby to do the whole swing through WI. We definitely on for HOB and Oneida but if you're going to do that why not Milwaukee and Wausau?

I'm just saying.

It seems that Joe has been working up to playing in these grand old theatres.  Very fitting, a classy place for a classy musican.

My husband and I plan on making at least this show.

I visit a cottage at least 12 times a year that is near Antigo and Crandon. I'd love to be able to go the the Wausau show, but unfortunately it's not on a good night for me, and I don't live in Milwaukee anymore....Wausau from Lansing would be quite the drive. I wish I could go though...it sounds like a great place!

Hi Becky,

Great about the nice venue; I hope you make the show! I haven't seen Dino post in a long time, unless he's in cognito!

We plan to get to Alverno and Oneida for sure - thinking about Wausau also - I sure will
miss not seeing Joe during the summer, but November will be here before we know it.!

Re: Joe at the Grand in Wausau!

Hey Angela, long time no chat.  I certainly hope to make the Grand show.  The hubster saw that the BoDeans are also playing there in Dec. and wants to see them.  I don't know that we can afford both.  I like the BoDeans, but I really don't care if I pay to see them at the Grand.  To see Joe there, on the other hand, with 2 new albums under his belt, would be very cool.  So, I might have to convince someone else around here to tag along with me.  I'm trying to figure out who the fans are up here. They must be a quiet but growing force. I did see something about a BITS program in Wausau in an earlier post I found, and thought maybe Dino was in on that, or at least our blues society must be.  I've been thinking about mentioning BITS to our music teachers here.  I don't even know who the Wis. Street Team coordinator is anymore, or what happened to Sara from Wausau.  Anyhow, my summer has begun and Joe is moving up in venues, and I'll toast to that!  Two times!!

NPB, I forgot to mention in my previous post, we also visit a friend's cabin near Antigo twice a year.  Deerbrook, I think, is actually the closest town.  Huge stretch of lakes in the middle of nothingness in Langlade County. Kinda reminds of the Deliverance movie, and we always hope the vehicle doesn't break down, hehehe.

Re: Joe at the Grand in Wausau!

I think I am out...and they pull me back in.

Yes, the grudgingly admited Joe Bonamassa fan is here.  The old curmudgeon.

I know about the Grand Show.  I was involved in the process, to make amends for my voting against Joe coming to big bull falls, which the street team so lovingly kicked my **** for.

Initially this show was supposed to be a blues in the schools only event, but then after some real work and support from local Joe people, the theatre made some moves.

And Joe gets paid.

Since I did my penance, I feel comfortable suggesting my man Scotts new record, the first Buddy Guy tribute record...From Lettsworth To Legend.  The first tribute record from someone within the Buddy Family.

So here is my new Joe story...while in Seattle a while back I ended up going to a Joe show.  It was not my intent, but he was there and I was there, and why not.

While standing in the crowd a crew guy came up to me and said, "Are you Dino from Wisconsin?"

I was in Seattle.

I said sure.

Ushered back somewhere, said Hi to Joe.

Thought it was insane.

When I told my mom, she laughed and reminded me that she has no grandchildren.

So I guess guitar god stories dont mean that much to 65 year old women.

Welcome back, Dino.

Re: Joe at the Grand in Wausau!

Just wait a minute, and I am sure I will offend someone.

I reread my post, and I want to state, that I do not think I had much to do with Joe in Wausau.  I had sstuff to do with it, and am proud of my work...but was less involved in that.

I do not want to overstate anything

Looks like tickets for the Wausau show will go on sale August 23.

Re: Joe at the Grand in Wausau!

Happy belated Fourth everybody!  Hi Dino.  I'm here in peace and was only trying to figure out who is behind the scenes for getting Joe back in Wausau.  I don't see Wausau fans on the forum anymore, (havent' been present myself lately) but it's cool that they want him back here!  One of these years, I hope to find more spare time to get involved in the music scene around here, but for now I can only make the occasional concert or fest, and spread the word as much as I'm able.  You can keep me posted on Scott Holt as you have.  I appreciate the connection, even if I don't always find time to follow up on emails, etc.

HI Dino - Glad to have you back - I like people with opinions....  I'm still waiting to see
Scott (remember we were trying to get him to Metrojam in Manitowoc?).  I think Oneida
or Shank Hall would be great for him.  Will check out the new CD - thanks for telling us
about it.  Are you going to see Walter Trout at Shank July 26th?  Jaci

I am not going to violate the small bit of existing goodwill by talking about another artist.  If you want some news, and there is a lot, feel free to email me.

As far as the Wausau thing went, I am pretty sure that it came about pretty naturally.  Initially it was a BITS thing, and then I think a night was let go at Oneida because the Wausau venue is a big theatre that was willing to take on the risk of a half empty theatre., and that is NOT a cut, but rather a realistic thing as a first time show is always a first time show without radio support. The thing is this, Joe has a significantly lower garauntee than a lot of people expect, and as a result he is able to play in some great rooms.

I think it went like this...BITS was booked.  William Morris has other artists at the Grand, and probably asked if the date was available and if the Grand was interested.  The Grand reached out to several people, and took their pulse, and then took the date.  Then I believe that an Oneida show was released.

I am sure that Sara, the Street Team boss was involved...but she has a new agency that she is running, so I am unsure.

Jaci, if you want I will have my guy play in your living room.

Thanks everyone.
