Topic: New (Old) Amp Day!

3 years ago I traded a '69 Super Reverb and $200 for a Marshall Bluesbreaker. I regretted it ever since. The BB is long gone and the SR had sentimental value as my wife purchased it for me in 1995 the year we met (I knew I would marry her). A few days ago I saw a Craigslist ad in Toronto for a 1969 SR and repied, as I always do, in  hopes of finding the original. Well as luck would have it it was the same amp and the guy needed to sell it to buy an engagement ring - the irony.

I now have my beloved Super Reverb back where it belongs. All original and unmolested. I forgot how good those amps sounded as Ive been lost in Marshall-land for a while.

This got to me to thinking, has anyone else out there had a similar story as I am sure that we have all regretted losing a guitar or amp at some point and wished we had it back.

In this case - now that I have it back it is staying for good.

Re: New (Old) Amp Day!

Great story. Those things kill BBs.

I regret selling my Marshall S.Jub...but it was to buy a ticket for the Zeppelin O2 reunion...in which I made front row. The amp wasn't on my mind at that concert...for sure.
I'd like to buy another one...one day. Since 2007, they have more than doubled in value sad

Still, I actually have some Jimmy Page amps now, so cannot complain.

What didn't you like about the BB? I've always kinda wanted one, but never played one. I keep going back and forth on getting rid of some stuff and picking one up or maybe in a few months start looking for a used one..which is probably what I'll end up doing should I seriously decide to purchase one. But really like to try one first.

Re: New (Old) Amp Day!

The Bluesbreaker was great - it wasn't that I didn't like it or anything like that. I was parlaying gear at the time to get my hands on my R7 Goldtop. There were numerous Super Reverbs for sale at the time and I quickly sold the BB once I got it. Really heavy and awkward though for a combo. Worse than the Super Reverb and that is saying something, as the SR is a backbreaker. I thought the BB sounded a little flat, or murky but ballsy as hell. Of course after watching some of Joe's vids using the BB I now regret selling it too...jeez - will it ever end??

Re: New (Old) Amp Day!

I kind of had the same story in reverse.  A guitarist I'd known for sometime had two Fender Blue Devilles - a 4x10" version and a 2x12" version.  He wanted to sell one of them so I bought the 4x10" for £400.  He subsequently sold the other amp too.  Roll-on 4-5 years and he phones me asking if I would sell him the amp back, to which I had to say "no".

The amp he sold me is probably one of the best tube amps I have ever come across - I get lots of compliments on my tone - and there was no way on God's Earth I was going to give it back!  Kinda felt sorry for the guy, but he was one of those players that never seems happy with what he has - always searching for a better guitar/amp/pedal/gadget.  He just didn't realise he had the best all along. yeah this happened to me witha  guitar.  My beloved 1995 G&L Legacy.  That guitar has spent more time next to me in bed than any of my gf's.  fell into some financial hardships about two years back and had to sell it to a friend.  luckily he had too many, and after a couple of years i was able to bring it back home.

Re: New (Old) Amp Day!

Wow Kev that's good news man. I know selling that particular Super Reverb always bugged you sO congrats getting it back! It's funny that this thread popped up because I've been actually considering selling or trading my Super Rever for a sweet sounding '66 or '67 Twin Reverb that I found....decisions decisions!

Re: New (Old) Amp Day!

Yeah thanks man - I am loving have this amp back. It is being "checked out" as we speak and the tech let me know it still has the original filter caps and tubes from '69! They need changing obviously and I am dying to get it back...did you do the trade for the Twin Reverb??

Re: New (Old) Amp Day!

Not yet, I'm going tommorow and will post pics of the deal goes through. It's the sweetest sounding Fender I've ever heard! The Supers do a more swirly midrangey thing that is so special though! The Twins have more of that crystal waterfall sound and have such a strong bottom...not to mention that legendary headroom for an incredible clean tone.

Re: New (Old) Amp Day!

In 1998 or so I bought a brand new Wine Red Les Paul Studio with a brand new JCM900. Had it for 4 months. Sold it for a staggering low price to pay rent! I wont mention how much I sold the whole rig for. It would make most men weep. I was a newly wed and being young I figured I could always get another rig later down the road. Wife and I split up 3 months later....

5 years ago I got that Wine Red Les Paul Studio(new). Last night I ordered a used JCM2000 DSL100 and 1960A cab. Took me 14 years, but I finally have my beloved LP/Marshall combo back!

That's a good story man and congrats on the happy ending too. The DSL 100 easily whoops a JCM900 for me. Great amps for straight up rock and blues.
