Topic: Covers and Originals...

Hi everybody,

A few days ago I started collecting some of the original Songs that Joe covered on his studio albums and was wondering if any of you have them all together?! I think it´s so interesting to listen to a song like "Burning hell" in John Lee Hooker´s and in Joe´s version ... two completely different songs (and you could fall on your knees for both of them... wink )!
I haven´t made a list of the songs yet ... I just collected those I already had on CD - so, still a lot of work to do ....

Re: Covers and Originals...

Hey Eva,

I'm new to this site but I think that's what's great about Joe. He does do covers but he makes them his own when he does them and it takes a special kind of person to do that. One of the best examples of this is the song Blues De Luxe which was written by Rod Stewart when he was still lead singer for the Jeff Beck Group. The absolutely best cover he's done though is Led Zeppelin's Tea for One, and forgive me for saying this all you Zeppelin fans, but Joe's version is much better.

Paul

Re: Covers and Originals...

Eva, I feel the same way as Paul. So far, when Joe does a cover, that song is his. My favorite is "If Heartaches Were Nickels" by Warren Haynes(sp?). That solo gets me!

Re: Covers and Originals...

Eva, I don't know of anybody who has collected just the originals of Joe's covers.  I really like  the original of Jethro Tull's "A New Day Yesterday" because I used to have that album.  Joe turns it up about 10 notches though.

Re: Covers and Originals...

Hey blu69cam  - I am a Led Zep fan and I do think that Joe´s version is better ! wink

I can´t really decide which one is my favourite cover ... but perhaps it´s really "burning hell", because I love John Lee Hooker and I just can´t believe that this is the same song ... or is it "A new day Yesterday" .... hmmm, can´t decide ....

Re: Covers and Originals...

I'd love to make a cd of all the original recordings...just need the time.

When I was shopping for my new stereo, I brought a few JB cd's with me. The place I bought from was a small, single owner store and I noticed a few discs on top of a cabinet, one of which was Tull, with the version of ANDY. Asked the guy to play that song, then inserted Joe's version. It was pretty cool...this guy never heard of Joe, but was duly impressed.

Yeah, I´ll make one ... perhaps we can exchange songs later (if one of us can´t find all of the Originals...).

Re: Covers and Originals...

so many roads.  joe totally nails that song.  he practically rewrote it by putting in that monster chugging riff.  most of his covers i havent heard the originals of.  but i have been going out of my way to listen to them as at first i was a little disappointed to hear that the majority of joes songs are covers but he completely and utterly makes them his own.  now i really cant appreciate most covers i hear as a lot of covers even done by good bands are just the bands playing the songs pretty much note for note.   so yeah his covers are the best i have ever heard.

Re: Covers and Originals...

It must be sorta good news/bad news when an artist finds out Joe's covering one of their songs....obviously Joe picks songs he likes, which has to be flattering. The downside is (IMO), the covers usually make your jaw drop.

Re: Covers and Originals...

Why do we assume originals are best? Joe is in a league of his own when it comes to guitar playing. That's really why we're all here. Now add to that his sultry and fitting voice and feel extra blessed. I know some amazing sound writers. And many that can't sing. Even more that can't play guitar! Writing is their gift. I , for one, don't want them unemployed. Top it all off with Joe's ability to go beyond the mainstream and cover unique songs. That's more than enough for us mere mortals!      Cathy

Some of my most favorites artists does covers, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray, Allman Bros. etc...  Joe seems to have a good mix between originals and covers.  There is a saying that there is nothing new under the sun.

I don't think anyone here assumes originals are the best (except for Joe's originals!). I can't think of anything Joe's covered that I haven't liked more than the original.

Sorry Bill, "we" not meant that way. I've thought about this for a while. I've wondered what it's like for someone with Joe's guitar gift to be asked about originals. There seems to be an attitude of ..well fine, you can play and sing, but can you write...out there. I can't do any of it and would be grateful for one skill! All Joe is good Joe....Cathy

No apology necessary. I agree that the general population gives more credit to original songs. Joe's done great with that as well. As someone else stated, Joe has a pretty nice mix of originals and covers, both on his albums and his live shows.

Re: Covers and Originals...

i have to say i dont think it is peculiar at all to at least ponder why someone with his ability doesnt write more songs.  im not saying it is bad, but it is a legitimate question even though with most of his covers he basically rewrites them.

I haven't counted, but my guess is that at least half of Joe's songs are originals. In fact, SILT is all originals, except for Unbroken.

Re: Covers and Originals...

i havent counted, but id say most songs arent, and having not written half the songs you are playing isnt the normal thing for an artist of his stature, im not putting him down or saying its bad, im saying it is true.
