Re: The NFL - National Football League

It is amazing how the loss of one or two on a team can upset the balance and turn a winner into an also ran. It is going to get spooky now with the head injury timeouts for concussion. I think the stock in 2nd rate QB's just went way up.

Lots of teams can turn on a dime. The Bears went from 7-3 to 7-7 in the blink of a broken thumb.
Whattya think the Super Bowl chances would be for the Pack if Rogers goes down, for the Saints without Brees, etc., etc.

Good question Bill and it's one that many Packer fans are a bit apprehensive about. They do have a very capable backup in Matt Flynn, but it would be very tough for anyone to step in and replace Rodgers, especially at this time of the year. They also have a young guy by the name of Graham Harrell and as I understand it, are very high on him for the future. Aaron Rodgers is a tough guy and has taken some pretty good shots this year while scrambling or running with the ball. He took a really hard hit while running it against KC, but then got up and had a smile on his face like he was enjoying the action. They've got a number of injuries on the offensive line and that's going to be a real deciding issue.

Injuries or lack thereof probably will be THE ultimate determination for receiving the Lombardi trophy for this year's season.

The healthiest team at the end may be the best team...and that is the way it should be.  If you cannot win without __________ (fill in the blank, Aaron Rogers, Peyton Manning, this guy, that guy, first stringers.......well, maybe you're NOT the winners you think.

Miami was the team that spoiled the ChiTown Bears from their undefeated season.  I bet everyone I knew $5 they would.  We went to my mother's (God Bless Her Soul) to watch the game.  That old woman jumped up and did the boogaloo in the living room, just a hollering...plumb undignified...it was awesome.  She didn't smile much in those days.

When I mentioned I had won 50 bucks from 10 different side bets, she looked very primly at me and said "So what!?!    I won a dollar from your daddy."   I just hooted and we made arrangements to be there when he had to pay up. (They were separated)

OH the "Put-on" He dug through his billfold till he found the nastiest bill he could find, rubbed it under his arms, down his britches, threw it on the floor and stomped all on it, all the while looking like he ate a green sourass persimmon, picked it up and handed it to her.

She just smiled and said so sweetly' "Thank you so much."   He just cussed n grumbled.  I just about expired from hyperventilating, hard as I laughed.  That was some game.

The football gods determined the Bears would not win that game. I lived the other side of it, watching footballs clang off helmets and turn into Miami touchdowns. 15-1 and then waded through everyone on the way to the championship, a single blight on their record. If you like lists, ESPN says they were the greatest NFL football team ever...it is open to some level of debate (not in my eyes) because of that single loss.

Yes I know it.  In a weird twist of events I wound up sitting with the Minister of Defense, Iron Mike Singletary, in a seminar in Miami a few years later. (after that season  I mean)

He was very clear about the zone they were in as a team and to the man being the result of fixed focus, steely eyed honesty about playing only to their strengths and a force of nature.  From coach to water boy they were a one eyed machine.  I had said the reason I knew the Dolphins would be spoilers had nothing to do with talent or lack thereof.  It was just something I knew...almost spooky.

I think every Bears fan in the country was pulling for Mike when he landed the 49ers job.
I think he made some progress, but who would have thought that it would be another former Bear that brought them back to a top level?

Who would have thought a former Bear(Cal that is) would bring the Packers back to top form, no doubt why Aaron Rodgers was named the AP's Male Athlete of the Year today. Heard about this on local sportstalk radio as the morning host was chatting with Jeff Tedford as an Aaron Rodgers love fest broke out. This got Niner fans shakin' there collective heads again wonderin' why not Rodgers???

What a great story BJ, I can just see her in my mind's eye jumping up and dancing! My dad was the same way, had to watch the Packers every game on TV and for a guy that wasn't really big into sports, he sweated out every game. Only went to one game in Milwaukee with my dad when my Uncle Tony gave us his tickets. It was a very cold, rainy and miserable day sitting on metal bleachers freezing our butts off. I believe the Packers lost...it was so long ago...but even so, it was great to sit with my dad in the stands. His last season viewing the Pack was the 1975 season...a long time ago...

I wonder how the Skins will handle being favorites for once? big_smile

One observation - as far as I am aware, no country in western Europe would ever consider holding a major sporting event on Christmas Day! Odd, in view of the importance of religion in US life, that such a game can be played there. Oh, and please note my support for the left coast teams. wink

The NBA starts on xmas day as well.   I think the logic is that everyone is home with family and there isn't much else on TV, so they get large viewing audiences.

As to your picks, i agree with the following exceptions:

Steelers are hurt... I'll take the Rams.
With Suh back in Detroits line up, I'll take them over the Bolts.

Re: The NFL - National Football League

The AFC "Wild West" got a little wilder this AM with a Raider win and Denvers loss. At the moment SD is down 17-0, if they  mount a comeback it will make for a wilder day next Sun. Niners got there hands full with Seattle which comes as no surprise the way the Seahawks have been playing as of late. This is round 2 of "What's your deal" between Harbaugh & Pete "The Cheat" Carroll.

Our Chargers played like chumps and deserved what they got. Now we hope this will be the finish of Norv and let it go on to something different. Raiders have a chance. They should beat us next week the way the Bolts played.

It really is the "Wild West" when it comes to the last games.  None of the teams in the West have been consistent.  It all has been pretty much "Wild".  Especially the game with KC, we almost handed it to them on a silver platter.

Well I will be glued to the TV Rick.  Please like Beth says " Have Mercy" on us, wink

These 4th quarters are gonna have me pass out yikes

I have no clue how the game is gonna go Rick, but there shouldn't be a dull moment with Raiders vs Bolts smile
