Topic: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

Im using a Marshall 4x12 hand wired cab with Celestion G12H speakers that to my ears sound quite harsh especially with tele's and strats...can anyone suggest a good replacement to give more warmth in the mids. What speakers does Joe tend to use in his set up? It has been suggested that I go for an X pattern with 2 V30's has anyone tried anything similar?

Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

PS -  I run a Peavey Delta Blues through the cab...

Re: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

Joe is using Electro-voice EVM12L speakers..

Re: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

Definitely try Scumback M-75s. They are pricey but awesome (especially if you're looking for warmer mids). They are cloned after pre-Rola Greenbacks. Avoid the V30s if the G12Hs are already harsh to your ears.

Yeah EVM12L's they do not add to the tone what you hear is what you head is putting out.

I would agree with Bluesbreaker. Stay away from the V30's because if the G12H's are harsh they would be a step in the wrong direction.

Re: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

I too am trying to decide which speakers I'm going to put in my cabinet (4x12 Mills Acoustics).  I just bought a Marshall YJM100 which is a souped up Plexi and I play classic blues/rock.  I would love to load my cab with Greenback but at 80 watts the speakers will blow in no time.  Some had recommended a mix of Celestion V30s and Classic Lead 80s but they just sound muddy to me.  Try this link, the guy is comparing 15 different speakers maybe it will help.  The EV12s do sound good in the video and so do the Swamp Thangs.

Also look at Austin Speaker  Works.  Expensive, but killer speakers.

Re: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

Scumback M75 large dustcap are my favorite. Not harsh at all.
The Celestion Heritage G12-65 are the warmest speaker they make.
The Scumback is better.

The Celestion Heritage G12H-30's are known to have a bright top end.
Vintage 30's DON'T!!! They have the high treble cut off. Vintage 30's are nothing like the G12H-30.
I've tested all Celestions and Scumbacks.
Don't rely on that lame speaker test Youtube vid.

Re: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

Celestion g12-65s all the way. Good balanced sound overall and a nice, warm mid tone. They sound especially good in a 4x12, wooden cab, which you have. ..MDF cabs with those same speakers won't have as much warmth.  I've found the speakers that tend to be brighter, work better with lower wattage heads.  I'm not familiar with the 'Peavey Delta Blues' amps other than I've heard of and seen them before.

I've posted that same speaker demo on another couple threads. I wouldn't say its "lame", but it does help show some differences in many different speakers so that you can actually hear them for yourself instead of relying on word-of-mouth descriptions. At least its another tool to help with your researching so you can make a better informed decision.

Re: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

Is the Peavy amp a tweed-type circuit? I dont know anything about that model. The type of amp you are using can help guide your leaker selection (along with your tonal goals). I like alnico speakers with tweeds (or alnico mixed with a good ceramic). I wouldn't favor a 4x12 closed back cab with alnico, though.

Re: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

Yeah the Peavey amp is a tweed, sort of Bassnman style thing with a 15 inch speaker. I use it alone for small gigs but most of the time run it through the 4x12 to give more spread. I've spent a few hours researching the options and Im still baffled. On the celestion website I did a tone test thing whiuch takes into account what you playing and your amplification and it pointed towards the G12t 75's which by all accounts are the standard Marshall cab speaker??? Any thoughts?

Thanks everyone for your help so far...much appreciated.

The worst Celestion made.

Re: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

I have 4 celestion Gt75s and never liked them until I put them into an old Marshall straight cab. They sound good in there for some reason, and I'm very picky with things. I've also read that after a lot of use they sound nice. Everybody hears things differently though.

Re: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

Joe's theory is if your using a speaker rated for 120 watts it doesn't color the sound of your 100 watt heads.  You get the true sound of your head and not the sound of the speaker on top of your head.  Me I've found that doing this can be good for clean head room, but if you have a bright amp its going to be very bright and might not hide that as well.  That being said I'd look for something with an Alnico Magnet if its bright it will warm it up.  If you have a dark warm sound go with either a ceramic or Neyodeum (think I spelled that wrong) to brighten up the amp.  Thats a good starting point but not all speakers work like that due to different cone materials.  I've had a few friends say they love Webber speakers for vintage sounds and I've heard people on here say eminence makes a large selection of speakers to meet your needs at cheap prices.

Scumback M75.

Re: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

I had four Weber built (May 2011) Scumback M75's that were made wrong. Sounded like total CRAP.
Jim of Scumback replaced them with four brand new speakers. They sound fantastic.
I run four 65w M75's in my 4x12's.
Have a single 100w M75 in my 1x12 combo cab. I use a Marshall 1987X in the combo and another one with the 4x12 cabs.

Re: Speaker suggestions for Marshall 4x12 hand wired

I simply love my EVM12-L Black Label speakers... I have them in a 2x12 vertical cabinet. Put 4 of them into a 4x12 and you will break your back.

My suggestion? GO with Eminence Swamp Thang (150 watt) and Governor (75?watt). you'll get fullness in you clean and some bite from the Gov'r. The Gov is a competitor to the V30, but it's WAY less shrill. I liked it a lot. Eminence is also USA made.

Dr Z cabs are almost always loaded with a Vintage 30 and a G12H30 70th Anniversary with great results. Go for it.
