Wow that blows! You try it at a practice before the gig? I know they have a bit of a different voice compared to a DSL, but shouldn't be as drastic to cause you the trouble you were having? Maybe some time getting a good feel on how to best EQ it in a band situation, that sucks though. Hope you can get it figured out. -S

No I didn't get a chance to practice with the band with it - I played it at home and it sounded great albeit at lower volume. Luckily I brought the spare with me...it was really strange - at first I was told to turn up, and when I turned it up to be heard, it seemed to be really working hard and every note would feed back unless I muted with my hand and rolled the volume back after every phrase (like Joe but with none of the grace and precision - more like a clumsy grab) When I have to do too much of that it affects my playing and I'm thinking too much. I change tubes and bias my DSL and other amps but I'm unsure how to bias the Jub - it appears I need to remove the chassis...I'd rather not take it into a tech just for tubes and a bias. This is my dream amp but it's like buying a 911 Turbo only to be beaten by your friend's VW GTI...

Yeah, thats weird if its squealing and making an ugly scene when turned up.  Something surely must be wrong, if you can't get a decent EQ out of the thing at concert volume.  Hopefully it just needs a tune up.  I personally would just take it somewhere and have it checked if I couldn't make any headway researching the problem online to decide if it may just need re-tubed and biased.  But yeah, if you have a good grasp on things of that nature, the link Spider posted might help.

When you take it into the shop have them check the relays between the tone stack for dirt. My Jub would sound killer one day and the next day be horriable. Took it to a tech and after 6 hours of poking around he found the relay in the tone stack was dirty causing the sound to go in and out, it was also way way out of Bias. One last thing, the Jubs are tougher to dial in than most marshalls, what sounds good at home never seems to work with the band.

From what I know the Tone Stack is your EQ, so your Bass, Mid and Treb controls. Mine was cutting in and out, which is why one day it would sound great and the next like garbage. This is what the amp tech told me a few years ago, All I know is whatever he did made it a much better amp. Hope that helps.

Big E - thanks for the tips! I will indeed bring the amp in to a tech to be serviced, tubes, etc and will intstruct the tech to check for those issues with the relays. Last night I stacked my DSL and Slash head on top of eachother and a/b'd them. This time though I used the Clean Channel on the Slash and drove it with a TS-808. (the same way I run the DSL). Man what a difference - the Slash sounded great! Very organic sounding, where the DSL was a tad "processed" in comparison - at least to my ears - but they sounded vwery close. I kept switching back and forth, playing one phrase on each, etc. I like a a base tone that is fairly clean, a hint of overdrive to smooth the edges - a nice warm Wind Cries Mary tone. Punch the TS for leads, and a Clean boost to take it up a notch. Maybe the suggested settings for the Lead channel (Lead Master on 10, etc) are just  not my cup of tea - just way to dirty and crunchy and muffled (sounded like crap at my gig) hence my desire to have it serviced. Maybe when I get it back it will sound better on the Lead Channel but I could see using it on the Clean Channel in the future. Anyone else use it like that? Or is that a Capital Crime to use a Jube like that?
