OK, for any Beth Hart fans pre-Joe.  What should I buy next in order, in case Santa thinks I've been more naughty than nice and I don't get everything I want.   tongue

Hi there,
As a Beth fan "pre-Joe" I can tell you a little about the albums. Only you can pick.

*Live at Paradiso is awesome - especially if you like the live sound (no studio alteration) which suits Beth's voice best. (Not for little kids though due to Beth's longshoreman's tongue - DVD as well.) For raw, live and gritty that's the one.

*My California has beautiful songs and is more of a mellow album - as that was the intent of the project to focus on storytelling.

*37 Days was recorded live in the studio and has a great live feel with hardly any studio effects over Beth's voice. Nice mix of driving rock and piano stuff.

*Leave the Light On is really a Beth classic. It's the first album she did after getting into recovery and is very cohesive. The themes focus on struggling and fighting to break old patterns, battling her demons and learning to live life to the fullest.

*Screamin for my Supper is one of my favorites. Great songs on that one and the first where Beth wrote all the material.

*Immortal was her first album and she did not write all the material. In my opinion the best songs are Immortal and Am I the One (both written by Beth) but they are better on Live at Paradiso.

*Beth was not happy about the release of the Ocean of Souls album. It was a demo that she doesn't like the sound of from the early 1990's and it was released by her former manager from many many years ago.

P.S. I am addicted to Don't Explain. I keep thinking I have to listen to something else and I do - such as Dust Bowl. But then I end up putting Don't Explain back in my player. My favorite Joe solo is the one at the end of I'll Take Care of You. I love all his work on the album but that one kills me every time.

Great summary!

My opinion is "Leave the Light On" is a masterpiece from beginning to end, and would be the one I would recommend if you were only going to buy one cd.
The Live at Paradiso DVD is also a MUST HAVE. It's one of the best live performances I've ever seen captured on DVD.

Agree that Leave the Light On is a masterpiece. Also agree that the Paradiso DVD is a must have. I've heard so many stories of people buying that DVD and sitting in front of their screen with their mouths hanging open. (Me included when I got it back in 2005.)  wink

Not so sure anymore, but I think I got my CD from Amazon. Album seems not to be available as download.

As Blues Sissi said, I also got mine on Amazon. I never noticed it wasn't in iTunes in the U.S. I don't know what's up with that??

According to Beth there will be some gigs with Joe/Beth/Joe's band together to promote Don't Explain. My dream is for a DVD... especially if the gigs are not close enough for me to attend. The combo of Beth & Joe together at their L.A. gig was almost too unbelievably awesome for words.

Re: Joe and Beth Hart

I'm s bit behind on this one ad I haven't been a big fan of Joe's recent work, but I just heard this album for the first time a few weeks ago.  Excellent, one of the top albums of the year.  Favorite playing I've heard from him in the past 5 years.  Really really good, and what a singer.  100% good album.

Better late than never, although I am a tad perplexed you grab hold of this 100%.  But glad you have!  This is really an enjoyable timeless (benchmark) starting project for Joe & Beth.

And since it was recorded and released last year, it is one of the best of multiple years!

Listened to it to and from work again today. Truly excellent and now looking forward to album 2 this year. I bet Joe loves the variety after months of touring.

I just came across this article on NPR.  It's an interesting history of the song "I'll Take Care of You" and all the artists that have covered the song including Joe and Beth. Agreed~the blues aren't worn out yet!!
