Topic: Instructional Material

Hey All,

If you’re interested in downloading instructional DVD’s, Tabs, Booklets that include mp3’s almost anything you can imagine the Usenet groups (news groups) are the way to go. Everything is free. I’ll be more then happy to help you get started. There are a few software programs your need. I’ll leave this post as is for now. If anybody is interested just post it and I’ll help you get started. I’ve downloaded more stuff then I’ll probably ever use.

Gibson355:  Sounds intriguing.  I've been an online "junkie" since '95 or so...heard of UseNet but don't really know anything about it.  Would be interested in hearing more.

PS  Just spent a little time surfing the YouTube vids for "guitar lessons" and there's a lot of stuff (some good, some not so good) out there.  I learned the right intro for Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" though :-)

Re: Instructional Material

Hey guys,

Sorry I didn’t get back to you sooner I got stuck on a job in Ft Myers. That’s about 60 miles south of me. Ended up spending the night there so I could get it done first thing the next morning.

I didn’t expect a lot of people to respond to this. Usually when I mention usenet groups everyone looks at me and say’s WHAT?  But the people that have taken the time to learn can’t believe the cool stuff you can get.

Geko, I don’t think you quite understand what usenet groups are. If you have an internet connection you have access to them. Contact your internet service provider and ask them what your news server address is. There is no such thing as a link to usenet groups. I’ve been participating in them since the late 80’s long before the World Wide Web existed.

Most people don’t know it but the usenet groups are part of your internet service.

CarljMD, I assume that MD means you’re from Maryland. I was just there in Hagerstown for the blues fest that Joe played at. As usual it was fantastic. I’ll be going to Ohio at the end of August to see him at the Fraze & the StMary’s blues fest. You say you been an online junkie since 95. You shouldn’t have any problem learning the usenet groups.

Look forward to helping you,

Bill

Re: Instructional Material

If you have an internet service provider you should contact them and ask for their Usenet news server address. That is what your need to get started. There are some providers that will not have them. I have never had an internet provider that didn’t. It’s part of your service. But some don’t. Example AOL doesn’t. In that case you can subscribe to one. I’ll provide a list of news group services. Also some links so you can get the software needed.

First your need a news group reading program I use Agent. You can use any group reader I prefer agent. Here’s the link. (note: this is a 30 day trail program)
http://www.tucows.com/preview/195240.

When installing agent you’ll have to enter your news server address and your username & password. It will ask you to retrieve the groups. Make sure to retrieve all groups. (around 120,000) Shouldn’t take long depending on you connection. Now here’s when you’ll need to find the group called alt.binaries.guitar.tab (there is a find button across the top) then add it to your desk. From this group you need to retrieve the headers. Click on the action button across the top and then click on (Get New Headers in Folder). Your first time you’ll probably get about 20,000 of then. Then across the top of the headers your see the status bar click on author this will sort them by author. (Have I lost you yet?)  OK there you go you now have everything in that group. This will take you a few days or so. When you find something you like highlight them right click and save all attachments. That’s when your need the WINRAR program to put them into one file.

There are many others alt.binaries groups that have alot of cool stuff.

You can also use Microsoft outlook. I have never used it but it can be used. Can’t give to much help with this. Most internet service provider gives support for this.

Here’s another link for Usenet tools
http://www.tucows.com/Windows/Internet/ … enetTools/

My news group provider is Super News it seams to have good retention. I have also tried giganews and it has good retention also. My own internet service provider is good but they only let you download 2 gigs a month. Most of the Usenet providers give you around 15 to 25 gigs a month for $10.00 bucks or so.

Usenet groups (news groups) Provider:
www.supernews.com
www.giganews.com  their site offers different languages
www.thundernews.com
www.tigerusenet.com

Your need a program called WINRAR. It will let you unzip files that you have downloaded and put them into one file. Here’s the link for that.

Got Robin Trowers DVD last night.

This will get you started. Let me know if I can help.

Re: Instructional Material

Is anything Mac friendly?

- Nic from Detroit... posting on JB's Forum since 6-2-2006
Ask me about my handwound Great Lakes Guitar Pickups
Since 2010, Bonamassa fans have taken advantage of my JB friend discount = my cost + shipping. cool

Re: Instructional Material

Yes, Mac users are welcome.  Go to whatever search engine you use and search USENET MAC. You should be able to find a news group reading software program for your Mac. Then just follow my instructions on my earlier post. Also you will find out a lot about the Usenet groups with that search.
