It might not tell you everything, but it says a lot!
Still waiting on that Fender Joe B Sig Strat...
Still waiting on that Fender Joe B Sig Strat...
Haha - I think the reply to that will mention something about 'hell' and extremely cold weather conditions ...
But, I've read that Joe said that the main people at F that he had the previous issues with are no longer there, and that the new management team appears to be OK, so there is yet hope that I may see a JB sig F branded guitar before they nail my coffin shut...
Well, 2012 is right around the corner. I think there's hope for it. I still believe Joe loves the Strats and Teles as much as his Gibsons. You don't go something like 20 years playing them and then decide they're not for you, although having a signature guitar is definitely something special. I loved the days when he would play Strats, Teles, Les Pauls, Gigliottis, etc. I read an interview where he said something along the lines of not playing his tour guitars and reaching into his collection when on downtime. Just check out the youtube videos of him at The Baked Potato where he plays the white Tele. Love it!
He broke out the Gigliotti Tele in Birmingham this week for "Bird On A Wire"
Regardless of what other guitars I may come to own, my butterscotch blonde Baja Tele will always be my No. 1, for a variety of sentimental reasons. What a kick it was to see Joe playing a similar-looking Tele at the Spud:

can't believe he sold it. guess it paid for the tax on his '59 :-)

The guitar was donated to a worthy cause. Joe didn't profit from it's sale.
Wasn't the neck from a 61' strat and he got Fender to make a body for it in the gold sparkle flakes. I think I also read that it had Seymour Duncan Antiquities in it. Fender basically came out with a guitar exactly like it after Joe had talked to them about a signiture model. Joe felt taken advantage of and stopped using the guitar and newer fender products completely. Thus overnight turned into a Gibson guy. Funny he's playing Leo Fenders other guitars Music Man so in a way he's still a Fender guy, even though Ernie Ball owns that company now and those guitars are nothing like the Leo Fender designs from the 70's.

yeah, makes me wonder why JB never went G&L... Especially the ones prior to 1995 that used the same lathes that were used for Fenders in the 50's and 60's (up until CBS bought them).
I think the neck was actually off a '64. The body was CS refinished in large gold flake, but I don't think the paint was done by the Custom Shop. If I remember correctly, the pups were rewound by Lindy Fralin.
I know its on here somewhere if someone was to spend the time to read all the posts about Goldie.
The story goes that Joes dad Len didn't like dealing parts or partscaster guitars at his store in Hamilton NY, so he gave Joe the parts to build the guitar. I'm not sure if I'm 100% correct as I'm going from memory but I have studied "Goldie" from the beginning. I believe the body was from the early days of the Fender Custom Shop, it was a LTD Edition 57 gold sparkle Strat with gold hardware, and yeah it was painted by the CS, the neck, pots and pups came from a 64 Strat. When Joe swapped over from the 57 CS maple board neck to the 64 rosewood neck, the guitar really came alive. If you go back and watch the videos and study the pictures, you'll see that the pickguard is a 8-hole 57 type guard and the neck had the 64 transitional headstock decal.
BTW, I still have a couple originals left over of the "girl on the phone" decal that Joe had on the top of Goldie. A tough decal to find. A easy decal to destroy when applying.
