Topic: Gibson ES 339--thoughts??

Anybody have any experience using a 339 for variety rock, blues, funk, R&B, motown, etc.
Not really concerned with how it fairs as Jazz box.
Looking for a broad spectrum range of tonal use from higher gain LP type leads to nice chanky open clean rhythms and er'thang in between.
A good friend told me too look at the 339's.  He said the the Gibson Pat Martino Sig model is really sweet believe it or not even though you wouldn't exactly call his tone sweet and also the Gibson Paul Jackson Jr. model is also really sweet.  For my budget I would probably have to stick to the non-signature models.

Re: Gibson ES 339--thoughts??

Sorry, no experience with the 339 but I have the ES-137 which I absolutely love. Yeah, it will do the mellow jazz tones but with the tone pots turned down its ready to rock.

Seriously, scope this model out before you make your decision!

Re: Gibson ES 339--thoughts??

Never played a 339 but I have a 333 on loan from my uncle.  Those (semi) hollow-bodies yield some sweet tones indeed but will give you more bottom end than compared to a regular solid body.  Also, they can feedback much quicker.  As far as the 333 I have, its been upgraded with burst buckers and it sings.  Sounds better than my LPs, I think.  Just something about the tone of those semi hollow-bodies that really appeals.  I'm not a clean player, so I couldn't say how well it cleans up depending on your amp but for overdrive and high gain, they will fair well.

Re: Gibson ES 339--thoughts??

I can only describe it relative to other guitars.

Looks-wise, it's the size of an LP with the looks of a 335. It weighs about as much as a light LP.

It sounds like a cross between a les paul and 335 - like a thinline version of a solidbody. The body is reminiscent of a double cut LP rather than a 335. The 335 puts your arm and hand in different positions. When you wear it, it is more like a Les Paul.

Personally, it doesn't float my boat. I like my semi-hollows big and my LPs like an LP. Guess I'm just old-fashioned. It's more a question of the neck fitting in your hand and the body resting on your body. If it fits, the sound is basically a permutation of the humbuckers in it (usually 57 Classics)

Re: Gibson ES 339--thoughts??

I've played a few and there were some quality control issues so I can't give you a really good assessment.  What I can say is that I've owned a few really nice 336's.  You can get them used and they can cover a lot of tonal ground.

You might want to consider a collings i-35 or the new lc model.  Collings is pricey but, in my opinion, the quality is hard to match.

Re: Gibson ES 339--thoughts??

I've played several 339s, and I really liked them. A 335-sized guitar is too big for my playing style, so I was looking for a smaller-bodied semi-hollow, and the 339 fits that bill quite nicely. It can do 335-style sounds (although not quite as "airy" due to the smaller size) really well, IMHO. I've heard the complaints about the quality control and have seen a poor quality guitar first hand, but I would not hesitate getting a 339 in the future. I should note that Epiphone is coming out with a version of the 339 for around $500, which may be a great value if the guitar is of good enough quality.

I've played a cs-336 now for about 6 years and i love it. I've played country, blues, & classic rock with it. sounds great through my super reverb as well as my jcm 800! here is a video of me playing my 336 through a 1982 marshall jcm 800 2204.

Re: Gibson ES 339--thoughts??

I have a 339 that I purchased brand new when they came out. I love that guitar. It is slightly larger than an LP, but smaller than a 335.

The finish on mine is very good and it plays beautifully. Mine has the 30 over 60's neck although I know some are available with the 50's style fatter neck. I definitely recommend that you play one prior to purchasing it if that is an option.

There was another thread about the 339, which you may want to look for. Semi-hollow tones out of an LP sized body is I believe what Gibson said at some point.

Nothin' but the Blues

Re: Gibson ES 339--thoughts??

Have you ever considered a vintage Japanese made Ibanez from the early 80's? A lot of collectors and players would argue that the guitars Ibanez was producing back in the late 70's and early 80's were better made than the Gibson and Fender models that they were copying. The Ibanez guitars in those days were made from start to finish by one luthier, meaning one man, one guitar.  It was not an assembly line procedure like that was already in place at companies like Fender and Gibson. In some cases they made models that Gibson copied. Perfect example is the size of the guitar you seek.  Ibanez was making smaller bodied versions of the ES335 before Gibson was.  The AS 100 made popular by John Scofield is 33 percent smaller than an ES335 and plays really sweet and much more comfortable.   Than they made another model the AM series which is the size of a Les Paul. Gibson copied their idea and started producing the ES339. The high end version of the AM series, the AM 205 goes for around 1700.00 on Ebay. They are real high quality instruments if you can get your hands on one in good shape. Playing a good  hollowbody is a lot of fun even without plugging in. I happen to work with a fellow that currently has over 50 vintage Ibanez guitars from this era.  I recently purchased an AS50 which is the least expensive of the AS series.  What a tone! It was not easy to get George to sell me the guitar.

Re: Gibson ES 339--thoughts??

I had one for a little while and though i liked the feel of the guitar (30/60 neck, look and size)  it had not settled in... to my ear it was a bit harsh with the amps i was running... Hotroded Marshall clone and Fender Champ type amps. I later picked up a 2001 ES-335 and LOVE that guitar, which has the same pickups and obviously the same type of construction.

To be honest i don't regret selling many of the guitars I've let go but in hind sight i would get that one back if i could... just needed to tweak the knobs on the amp a bit and let her settle.

Great guitar at a great price point. IMO

Re: Gibson ES 339--thoughts??

I think they are great guitars.  I am short... 5'5" so a 335 looks huge on my frame.  Its rather stupid looking.  And I love those guitars.  The 339 is a great alternative. They play great and sound great.  I personally thought maybe the pickups were hotter than the 335 in a guitar center test.  But it might have been 57's against Bustbuckers I am sorry I dont recall.

I am saving up for a Midtown Custom. Almost there.  I played one the other day and so far its my favorite in the semi hollow designs Gibson is putting out.  Great guitar.
