Re: The NFL - National Football League

One point. One lousy point. I feel for you Jeff.  sad

Yesterday's other games pretty much went to form. The Lions shot themselves in the foot several times too often to stand any chance against the man with the guided missile arm, while the Niner offense took a day off. The Ravens defense is pretty solid even without Ray Lewis.

I hope y'all have recovered from your gastronomic excesses.  wink

Re: The NFL - National Football League

Well the brawl in Baltimore didn't go the Niners way, but was a good gauge of where SF stands as a playoff contender. I wouldn't bet the farm on these guys in the post season as the competition at that stage all have good defenses or they wouldn't be in that position. It's no secret here in the Bay Area that Alex Smith isn't a great QB, just good enough at times.

Re: The NFL - National Football League

Yeah I thought having Ray Lewis out might have an impact but they were good to go.  I watched till the very end.
Nice last game for the day.

Looking forward to Sunday's match-up for the Raiders.  Thought Chicago might pick up Kyle Orton, but I see the Chiefs just picked him up off waivers. I guess now we will see him again in week 16 since he is with KC now.

Although Ford and McFadden will be out for this Sunday's game. Really Glad to see Heyward-Bey wasn't badly injured and hopefully he will be  able to participate if he is up to it.

At least you will be at home instead of in Denver.

Also looking forward to the Jets and Buffalo good early morning game

Thanks for the support RiverCat. I am not very optomistic. I'll root for your Raiders, my brother in law looks to have the upper hand this year so we'll toss him a bone.  wink

Re: The NFL - National Football League

You have to wonder if Norv Turner will be "seeking other opportunities" at the end of the season.  With the talent that the Chargers have, losing 6 in a row and having a record of 4-7 is pretty bad.

Just think... they fired Schottenheimer after the 2006 season bacause he went 14-2.

Sorry about your Chargers, it did go into overtime. So you took it to the very end.
They say there may be something wrong with Rivers this year, in that he is not his normal playing self.  Does he have an injury that you know of?

I will say one thing, Norv Turner is a good offensive coordinator.  Alex Smith of the 49ers really liked Norv when he was there.  Not everyone can make the leap to a head coach because it is different responsibilities and the roll you have to take on.  As a Raider fan, I want you to keep him.  He is a nice guy and we will see what the future holds.  Being a coordinator you can be more hands on and it's still a wonderful job to have.  I'm just saying you don't have to be a head coach to have a great job that you enjoy in the NFL and some people are better fits in different areas of the teams.  It takes a huge depth of knowledge to be a scout.  You never here about the talent scouts for the teams, but their contribution is invaluable.  I see scouts all the time at the RiverCat's games.

Re: The NFL - National Football League

Hue Jackson, you are the man for giving the respect that you do to "Coach Davis".  For letting us know what valuable information he left you with, and how you are assimilating that knowledge in your leadership of the team.  I feel so much Raider Love in you and so happy that you and Al Saunders is guiding a way for the Raiders to finally have an explosive offense, especially once they have more time together and McFadden can come back. Hue's play-calling is just what this team needed in order to show what these young players can do with their talent.  Finally we scored a touchdown in the 4th quarter. Yippee! big_smile

From are local paper:

The two constants have been kicker Sebastian Janikowski and punter Shane Lechler.

The two longest-tenured Raiders – both in their 13th seasons in Oakland – added to the record-setting legacies as Raiders in Oakland's 25-20 win over the Chicago Bears Sunday at O.co Coliseum.

Janikowski broke the team record he shared with Jeff Jaeger by making six field goals. Lechler broke the record he shared with Wayne Crow for longest punt in team history with an 80-yard kick, three more yards than the record.

Thanks largely to specials teams and a defense that forced three turnovers, Raiders improved to 7-4. Oakland is a game ahead of Denver for the lead in the AFC West.

"I said to the team when it was over," said Raiders coach Hue Jackson. "Those are the two men that were here the last time this team was 7-4 and those guys have a lot to do with it because they did a tremendous job." The offense couldn't find the end zone until the fourth quarter so Janikowski provided the bulk of the offense and Lechler's punts helped the defense keep Chicago from beginning drives with good field position

Hester owns the NFL record for total kickoffs and punts returned for touchdowns with 18 but was a nonfactor thanks to Janikowski and Lechler.

"First time in history I've seen somebody kick an 80-yard punt that was in the air," Hester said. "Not just a good roll where somebody might kick a ball and roll a good 30…I thought I was back pretty good – I was about 50, 55 yards deep and he still boomed it over my head."

In fact Hester had to sprint backwards to catch up with the ball.  It was that far.  We wouldn't have won if it wasn't for these 2 guys.

Kudos to Heward-Bey for coming back from a hard hit last week and making great catches today.  He's progressed tremendously this year from where he was.

Kudos to our offensive line who are no-names but can play different positions within that line when someone gets hurt. What a great hole you opened for Bush for the touchdown that we needed to win. That was all offensive line there.

Kudos for the least penalties I can remember.  Kudos to the defense, some great playmakers, Wimbley, Kelly. It's so nice to see this team playing as a unit with some breakaway plays.  It wasn't a pretty game, but they fought to get the  job done.

Carson Palmer did not have a great game today.  His passes were off today.  He made one when it counted. But it shows that this is a team game and where one place lacks you can always try to make up for it somewhere else as a team.  And that is what was good about today's game.  They helped each other.  smile

Now it is off to Miami.

It came down to the very end, you have a tough defense(you wouldn't let us in the end zone sad ) and it was a hard fought game till the very end.  Your new quarterback is quite the scrambler and that can be an effective weapon.

Re: The NFL - National Football League

The Saints played a great game last night.  Brees is amazingly accurate (and he even ran one in for a TD) and the 2nd yr tight end Jimmy Grahm had a fantastic game with 2 TD's.  Sproles, Ingram and Pierre provided enough of a running attack to keep the defense off guard for the passing game.

I can see the battle for the NFC coming down to the Packers and Saints.  Hopefully, the schedules work out so they meet in the NFC championship.  That would be a fun rematch to watch.

George,
I have to tell you point blank, I was HAPPY to see the Saints come marching in.  Anytime, anyplace that the Giants get beat is a good day in my book and it makes going to work easier with my 2 Giant fan employees. (one who is a faux fan who switched allegiance because of being an animal lover. Don't go there, I know you hate on Vick too)  hmm

Back to the game, I respect the Manning brothers, but I gotta' say, Drew Brees is the total package, just an outstanding & accurate quarterback who was firing on every cylinder last night and an excellent role model. It was magic and destiny when he descended upon New Orleans. The Giants play on New Jersey turf and although Philadelphia fans have a bad rap, those New Yorkers are overly aggressive and so OBNOXIOUS, generally speaking!!!  Of course, excluding Joe and all of the Bonamasses, etc.  wink  smile

You know how some people can look like a version of their dog or a dog...If Eli Manning was a dog, he'd be a bassett hound, he has the saddest eyes and he does this thing when he's frustrated, he's got a puppy-dog thing goin' on...just an observation of my weird thinking... big_smile

I could care less about the Giants, Angela. I'm a Skins fan, for my sins. I was bemoaning the entirely unnecessary win in Seattle which has destroyed any hopes of the Suck for Luck stakes.  neutral
