Topic: Vintage Modern vs DSL vs JVM

Looking for a nice back up/companion for my matchless independence, had all sorts of mesa, fenders, even a two rock but I'm a marshall guy at heart so Im looking at the amps above.
I guess i would be happy with either, I do gig and need something that can hold its own in a four piece rock band, I use some choice overdrives usually and don't really need more than two channels, I use strats, les paul's and a couple of customs.
I've tried all but the DSL which I will remedy shortly but would like to hear anyones opinions on the virtues of any of the above.

Any input is appreciated!  cool

Re: Vintage Modern vs DSL vs JVM

+ for the DSL ..I personally think it's the best standard run model Marshall now offer.

or perhaps wait for another 35 days and see what their 50th Anniversary brings  cool

Not a bad idea, not heard any whispers though, will probably be a special edition MG or something!  big_smile

Re: Vintage Modern vs DSL vs JVM

Ah yes. A 50th MG with gold tolex or something hideous! haha

Re: Vintage Modern vs DSL vs JVM

Hey man, you can't knock the MGs for tone/value stakes...they're not bad amps really, as far as solid-state non-modelling amps go...

Personally I'd go for the VM or the DSL - the JVM probably does too much for what you need it for (4 channels, each with footswitchable modes.....), although it does sound great. The VM is the more 'vintage' sounding of the two (it runs KT66 output valves instead of the DSL's EL34s) whereas the DSL has higher gain capabilities, but other than that there's not really a lot in it...the major difference between the two is the DSL does more (two channels, various footswitchable 'OD settings') whereas the VM is more of a plug in and play amp in comparison. Oh, and I've got a feeling the reverb in the DSL is spring, whereas the VM's is digital...

My two cents? Go for the VM, crank the master as loud as you dare, and wail....I did just that with a friend's 50w VM head and the tone was smokin'  big_smile

Or look for a second-hand Bluesbreaker combo...

Peace

Re: Vintage Modern vs DSL vs JVM

i have experience with all three amps you mention but for my money I would choose the JVM......it is by far the most versatile of the three and although it has th efour channels and the modes within the channels you can pick one or two of them and park it there all you want and it sounds great.

with that said I do think you cant go wrogn with any of the three...all great amps.
