It took me 15 minutes  to do this one.... They always say can you do it better yourself... Well I tried..  Mind you many of my friends appear on the Rolling Stone list...  I am really glad to see Derek so high up there ect ect he is world class... This is by NO MEANS a slag upon any of  them... I thought this would be a fun discussion for this forum.. It beats beating up on Rolling stone..  feel free to make your own variation.. Again.. I did this quick..  so its kinda in no particular order...  Something for the post turkey and cranberry feast...

Re: So I did one myself...

great list Joe and quite exhaustive, but yeah you are too humble to list yourself. I try to divide it up into subjective inclusions and "no brainers", those that you really cannot argue that they should not be in, like Eric Clapton. Trust me here Joe, you may be young but you definitely belong. My list is a little heavier on rock artists, and agree on Frank Zappa and Mick Taylor. Others in my 100:
Angus Young
Mike Campbell
Alex Lifeson
Alan Collins
Eric Gales
Jeff 'Skunk' Baxter
Rick Derringer
John Cippolina
Mike Stern
Buckethead
Steve Morse
Jorma Kaukonen

But you did come up with Steve Hackett, nice selection.

Re: So I did one myself...

....as i read down the list i smiled when i read 'Mick Ronson' ...the 3rd album/LP i ever bought in my young life was ...Slaughter on 10th Avenue and this particular track is one of my personal top 20 fav's ....also a track that i meant and thought to post, many times, in the thread 'songs you'd like Joe to cover'...how about it Joe!? truly fab piece of music!  cool

...oh! ...Michael Hedges too! ...was this an inspiration for Woke Up Dreaming Joe in some way? ...i remember sitting in my cab years ago watch a lunar eclipse unfold listening to this classic piece of acoustic wizardry! ...super cool and shivers down ya spine stuff!

"the dots"  lol never heard of that show

After reading your post you made me pull out my Vital Information stuff.  This is how I became familiar of Frank.
Steve Smith, the drummer in this band is one of my all-time favorite drummers.  Being its Thanksgiving I could use some drumsticks wink

Also its nice to see Joe's extensive list and to see Paul Kossoff get a mention on a list along with Montrose and Trower
they never seem to be on lists.

Some of mine I'll add that I like are:

Michael Shenker and Uli Roth and just Scorpion guitarists in general.  Such a stinging guitar sound just like the bands name.

Rik Emmett-great singer and guitarist combined

George"Mr. Scary" Lynch

Gary "Ho Ho Ho" Hoey  Have to have his Christmas Music.

George Benson- such a sweet man and a sweet tone.

1 up and comer "John 5" like how he can be a shredder or just play for what the band he is in calls for.

And Lance Lopez - Love his music and I just think the guy is a Beast and when him and Eric Gales team up. I wanna be there!

my Heavy Metal Hippie, Frank Hannon - His combination of acoustic and electric guitar on songs just make Tesla Songs Rule forever for me!  And I just love the music he makes.

"Holy Toledo"  -  Bill King   "Just Win Baby" - Al Davis  "The Autumn Wind" - Steve Sabol

'I'd add Tull's Martin Barre to the list. Very underrated.'

Just noticed JB has Martin B on his list but I'll add the late Bert Jansch as well

Bit of Iron Maiden also. Better playing than a lot suspect.

Come on the Blades (sorry Idolbone just had to borrow your line)

Re: So I did one myself...

I need to add Nils Lofgren to this list

No Hits, No Hype.......................Classic Rock Jan 2012

Re: So I did one myself...

Another one not mentioned so far is Neal Schon.  Although better known for Journey's corporate rock sound and 'that' song, his solo albums contain some of the most melodic guitar work you'll hear anywhere.
