Topic: So I did one myself...

It took me 15 minutes  to do this one.... They always say can you do it better yourself... Well I tried..  Mind you many of my friends appear on the Rolling Stone list...  I am really glad to see Derek so high up there ect ect he is world class... This is by NO MEANS a slag upon any of  them... I thought this would be a fun discussion for this forum.. It beats beating up on Rolling stone..  feel free to make your own variation.. Again.. I did this quick..  so its kinda in no particular order...  Something for the post turkey and cranberry feast...

My sister's been saying Wes Montgomery all day long! Great list, Joe!

LIVE MUSIC IS BEST

Re: So I did one myself...

Now that is much better! Off the top of my head I can think of only three I would make room for:

Joe Bonamassa
Pat Metheny
Tommy Emmanuel

Re: So I did one myself...

The above mentioned list proves a truly unbiased and openminded approach to this, regardless of whomever composed it should it be read elsewhere.  When you get into the elite group of players mentioned here, nobody is really better than the other.  Sure; skill and technical ability varies, but as a whole: they may not play all the notes on the fretboard, but they play ALL the RIGHT ones. -Seth

This list is really easy for me!      wink

Re: So I did one myself...

Chet Atkins, Buddy Guy, Hank Garland, David Gilmour, Brian May, Joe B. of course.

Rolling Stone should have named that list "100 guitarists with the most influential attorneys/agents."  roll

Re: So I did one myself...

I'd have to have an 'Australianised List' with Tommy Emmanuel, Michael Fix, Frank Gambale  & Ian Moss on it somewhere...  wink

Good to see Segovia made it onto Joe's Top 100.  If we are going down the Classical road, I would add John Williams, Julian Bream, Jose Maria Galliardo Del Ray (!), Maximo Pujol, Stefan Rak and Karin Schaupp to that list amongst others.

No Frank Zappa?

Re: So I did one myself...

Danny Gatton's so good you just had to list him twice!  ;^)  I'm really glad I had the chance to catch him live way back on August 13th, 1989 @ Regan's Silver Lake (not to mention my first time seeing you perform live ~  WHAT A DAY!!!).

Great list!

I'd also add Gary Hoey to the list though.

Re: So I did one myself...

Wow Alan Holdsworth.. I only think of him with Carivn Guitars; Interesting list Joe.

what about Arlen Roth, Jeff Healey and Rik Emmett?

and BucketHead Brian Carol

But I head that the Black Country Communion guitarist is pretty good too.

This is a great idea and then adding others. You just brought up someone I completely forgot about.

Way to go with the add-ons Devan.  I haven't heard Frank Gambale's name in years. He used to play with Steve Smith.

Some of the classical people you listed, I haven't heard of so I will check them out.   Thanks for the heads up. big_smile

Re: So I did one myself...

Some favorites of mine that are list-worthy, Steve Morse, Dan Tyminski, Jorma Kaukonen & Will Kimbrough. I'm surprised that Steve & Dan didn't make Joe's list.

Re: So I did one myself...

What a list!  Recently I was watching Rory's Irish Tour dvd and remembered that Joe was strumming this man's axe not more than a month ago.  Here's a taste of #38 on Joe's list.

So raw, so good.

Re: So I did one myself...

Kinda proves a point here...  There is no such thing a fully comprehensive list of the best 100...  Everybody can agree on the first 50 but the rest is pure taste..

Re: So I did one myself...

Glad to see Joe include Roy Clark, Chet Atkins and Glen Campbell.  I liked his list alot.  Of course, Joe isn't arrogant enough to put his name on his own list, but he's definately in the same company as many on both RS's list as well as the JB list.
