Topic: Need a second amp with good fx loop for stereo rig
Any recommendations on a second amp? My main amp is a Komet Trainwreck Songwriter 30 into a Komet closed back 212 cab with celestion heritage greenback g12h30 speakers. The amp was designed by Ken Fischer before he passed away, like all the famous trainwrecks he built, to be very striped down with an extreme focus on physical preservation of the most harmonically complex aspects of the guitars tone. At that, it excels. Its a very strong and dynamic mid range amp. Not overly chimey on top and with just the right amount of bass depth. Actually with that closed back cab, I've got bass response to spare.
Problem with amps like is is that they are soo overwhelming articulate that they can be hard to play lead thru since every single nuance of a mistake comes thru the mix like a dagger in my back reminding that I need to practice more
Other problem is with playing in a 6-7 piece band, space is generally not a big luxury and so more times than not I'm in a very close proximity to the rig. We don't use wedges. We all use in ear monitors. I hate the wet noodle tone of my amp in my ear monitors so I play one in/one out or partially out so I can still hear the real amp tone.
I turn the cab backwards or at a backwards angle into a corner to allow me to turn up and drive the amp harder. I use a very good Senheiser e906 mic
What I want the second amp to do as well as any additional pedals I need is this:
Give me a spongy compressed feel to balance the "mistake broadcaster" "cut thru any mix like a light saber thru butter" aspect of the komet
Also I want a good USABLE fx loop so I can run a little delay effect without it "running away from me" as Joe puts it. I know verb and delay should be separated out if I read that correctly so I'm not opposed to putting a bit of verb via a pedal in front of the komet if I can find one that's works well enough in front of an amp (I don't want very much of either, just enough to take my solo tones from good to half-assedly approaching epic
I also want the amp to have a really chimey twin, ac30, matchless style clean to add some sparkle to my cleans. (high end clean clarity is something I struggle with due to my amp not being an overly chimey bright amp and Lollar PAF pups in my PRS custom 22 giving my guitar a warmer mellower tone and because the cab is pointed into the wall, my on-stage perceived tone comes out dark sounding to me
As far as getting the right lead tone, my amp is one channel and it breaks up superbly but isn't a high gain distortion type amp and thus requires a pedal for OD's.
The second amp would be nice to have its own lead channel if it's a usably good tone and isn't too grainy. That's what I hate about the one amp one OD pedal setup. I can get great rock power chord tones for the few songs we do that I need that for, but I can't get a saturated yet smooth lead tone. I get that grainy jagged sound on the higher notes and if I try rolling back the highs on my fulltone plimsoul OD pedal it's either too grainy or way too dark and muffled
Here's what I'm kinda thinking:
Run my Komet as is and trade the plimsoul for a good RF dumble/twin OD pedal and possibly a verb pedal
Run the second amp as a saturated high gain either via a channel on the amp or pedal and run my delay into the fx loop of amp number 2. And have the amp set up to round out the frequency range by focusing on upper mids and trebles
Or, at the amounts of verb and delay I need, it's possible that the second amp (assuming it also has it's own verb) can do both. Verb on the amp and delay into fx loop and keep the Komet dry
Either way they would both be pointed backwards or behind a plexiglas shield to allow harder pushing
Btw, I know that the guitar I'm using has a lot to do the clean clarity issues I'm having. I'm also looking a getting another axe. Possibly a JB les Paul??? I'm not one to buy a product just because somebody's name is on it. Fact is, from what i hear in demos and what people say, seems like it's just a very solid axe and at a good price
I typed this on an iPad so forgive any major typos
Thanks for the help
