Don't lose sight of the fact that this is a post season tournament, deeming the winner the national champion is technically a gray area. Ohio State was the best team in the regular season according to sports writers, UConn or Butler will be crowned the champs of the tournament and tagged national champs. I'm not saying this because the Buckeyes lost in the tourney, but the teams in the finals lost more games than the top ranked teams at the end of their respective regular seasons. how does this sit with you other hoop fans?????

Good points Dawg.  Yep the National Tournament is basically who's the hottest, and in most cases the luckiest team at years end.  With the exception of VCU, which was embarassing alot of good teams, the other three fell into the above both descriptions.  Now that it's Butler and UConn in the final we are certain to have a champion with close to double diget losses.  The last time a team was voted number one after losing in the tournament was Indiana's '75 team.  They lost by two points to a team they had beaten by nearly 20 points in the regular season (Kentucky) in the regional finals.  That was their only loss that year and the following year they went unbeaten enroute to winning the championship.
My condolences to Liz's Cats.  They've got nothing to be ashamed about losing to a good Huskie team.  I watched their four incoming players for next season in the McDonald's All-Star game and trust me, if Jones and Knight decide to stay, they'll be the favorite to be NCAA champs in 2012.

Dang! We lost  sad  and to a really good Connecticut team for the 2nd time this year.  You're right Rick, a local sports reporter said "we couldn't hit the water if we were standing on the beach" No excuse for the free throws 4 for 12 those extra points could have made the difference.  This team went further than most including myself expected and will be remembered fondly in our storied basketball history. Now the question who's stayin' & who's goin' ???  Oct 15 just over 6 months away and then we get do it all again! CANNOT WAIT!!!

edit: SPAMBOT!

I've been wondering where #1kyfan has been.  I think this may have been her last post and I hope things are okay for her.  Kentucky has been hammered as well with bad weather.  Knight and Jones may be gone, but Kentucky will be favored to win a banner next year.

Re: NCAA Basketball

Hey Liz,

Glad to hear all is well!

For all the excitement during March Madness, I would have been happy with either team winning, BUT its a real shame Butler totally ran out of steam the way they did.  Now that its over, I'm glad a Big East team won & I'm fine with Kemba going pro, so we don't have to face him again.  big_smile  'Nova may need at least 2 years to rebuild a decent team...

The other sport Kentucky is so famous for has dominated the news coverage this weekend! I'm sure this has probably been on ESPN, these guys haven't gotten as much local media attention as they probably would had it not been Derby weekend! Brandon Knight & Deandra Liggins are IN, Terrance Jones is OUT! Knight announcing Friday, Jones by Twitter shortly before post time of the derby. Liggins making his announcement late tonight.  I really hate to see Liggins go he's become one of my favorites. Jones is very good, I was actually surprised & glad to see him come back I think it will be very good for him. The 11-12 season should be a good one!

It would have been nice for Knight to stay an extra year because that would've made Kentucky practicably unbeatable next year.  With Jones staying and hopefully Liggins to go with their 'fab' class they ain't gonna lose too many.  I just hope Calipari can stay out of the NCAA's crosshairs.

What NBA lockout? Not in Kentucky tonight!! Sorry a little off topic here wasn't sure if there was a NBA topic so for time's sake I thought I would share here. At Rupp Arena tonight in Lexington it's the Kentucky All Stars versus the Villains proceeds to benefit the V Foundation for Cancer Research. The line up

Big Blue Allstars: Keith Bogans, DeMarcus Cousins, Josh Harrellson, Chuck Hayes, Brandon Knight, DeAndre Liggins, Jodie Meeks, Nazr Mohammed, Enes Kanter (his 1st ever game at Rupp!) Tayshaun Prince, Rajon Rondo, John Wall, the Coach, Rex Chapman

The Villains: Corey Brewer, Kenneth Faried, Rudy Gay, Eric Gordon, Tyler Hansbrough, Shelvin Mack, Zach Randolph, Nolan Smith, Terrence Williams, the Coach none other the a Kentucky fan's worst enemy, Christian Laettner!

Should be very entertaining and for a great cause! Many of these guys played back in August in 2 sell out exhibition games against the Callipari coached Dominican Republic team. Always great to have them back in the state. Many keep their ties to Kentucky and always fan friendly when they are in their "Old Kentucky Home"

Now I'm going to go watch some basketball!! 2011-2012 NCAA season will be here before you know it  cool

OK, ready to gear up and get going. That sounds like a fun game, wish someone had filmed it. I was bored last night and watched most of the KY Blue/White scrimmage game. Very interesting first half but the blue had their way in the end. Terrence Jones is a beast, and Michael "the Kidd" Gilchrist is going to be something special (good luck keeping him around 2 years). First game in about 2 weeks, I'll be making some trips to Tuscaloosa. Oh no, who is that ranked at 17 in the nation? It seems like year after year we underachieve. Maybe this year will be different. Let the games begin, and see you in March if the BB gods allow you to "bracketize yoself".

NBA Schmembeeyay. I could care less about the pro game. Doubtful our Aztecs will be repeaters. Losing half the squad's seniors made it near impossible. Great coach though and we await another surprise. The ball is rolling on the mesa and Aztec fever will last.

Re: NCAA Basketball

yeah #1ky it was FSS or FSN, can't remember which. I saw some of the highlights from the Transylvania game. Neil Everitt on ESPN even asked why this game wasn't played on Halloween night. roll I'm ready, we open with UA Huntsville who has had some pretty good players in recent years. Don't expect too much resistance from them. To alleviate the pressure in my brain and stomach caused by THE football game tomorrow I wore a UA basketball Tshirt to work today, getting some funny looks.

Well, in just a bit, our fearless leader will have his military moment, figuratively converting a huge floating sword to a plowshare. Word on the street is he will be a participant in a 3 on 3 at halftime. He recently recieved 12 stitches from a stray elbow in just such a match. UNC vs Michigan State should be a nice matchup. Re: NCAA Basketball

enjoyed the game on the carrier as well, 14 mph winds forecasted did not show up which was a good thing. Steve needs to stay out of those pickup games, isn't he a little old to be playing full contact? Well, we had 2 drop in UCLA and Vandy, who'll be the next in line for heartache. Bama looked OK last Fri against No Florida, but had a great game last night vs an Oakland team that was supposed to be pretty good. Not so much, it was 23-22 and we went on a tear to end the half, never looked back. I think everybody got in the game, some freshmen made key contributions. That's the whole thing, Grant has just got to get them all on the same page, talent is there.

We are off to Puerto Rico for a little tourney action, game 1 on Thursday vs Maryland, ESPN-2 at 5PM EST.

Re: NCAA Basketball

I had a great time with my daughter at the Rebels game last night. The Rebels are looking great! Had they not been showboating a few times, they would have broken the century mark for the first time since 2006. Still the Rebels are undefeated with new Head Coach and former player David Rice along with Rick’s the former San Diego Coach Justin Hutson and Rice’s fellow teammate Stacy Augmon to put the Runnin’ back into the Rebels.

It’s going to be a great season.

Re: NCAA Basketball

It is going to be good out west. Aztecs lost the bulk of the starters from last year's great team, but the performance so far looks good. One loss to very good Baylor after a tournament over the weekend and a long flight. They hung with them in the first half but ran out of gas and composure for 5 minutes and that was that. They nipped USC last night on a buzzer beater, so they have some fight. Looking forward to the games vs the Running Rebels.

Re: NCAA Basketball

sad news indeed Mike, and it seems to come in bunches. watched Texas A&M lose to an inspired Miss State team last night. Bill Kennedy the coach of A&M has been diagnosed with early stage Parkinsons.
Bama looked pretty good except for getting in some foul trouble early, ran away from Maryland and will play a 2nd round game tonight in Puerto Rico tourney. I have not looked to see who we get, but could be an NIT rematch with Wichita St.

Indeed it is the Shockers, time for revenge, a dish best served COLD.

Our Aztecs exceeded expectations with a gritty comeback win in overtime over a very good Long Beach team who had just dispatched Pitt decisively on the road. Another win and they might make the national rankings. 5-1 now.

that is a real nice win Rick, they should be ranked. Did the kid Ware for LBS not have a good game? Well we got out of Puerto Rico with the tourney win, Purdue was not as good as I expected. Watched the Michigan-Memphis game yesterday since I was sick, Memphis was obviously overranked and everybody will move up again since they were #8. I would not want to play Michigan right now, they looked really good and can stroke it from the 3 line for sure. Bama goes back to the early season schedule on Thurs with the Florida A&M Rattlers, should be an easy one.
