Topic: Need a new neck pickup.

Ok so I'm sick of the Alnico II Pro in the neck! I get the rolled back tone with the tone at full. No articulation at all. Just that Clapton like tone as soon as I flick to it, so I need something with a bit more clarity to it.
Rarely going to the neck pickup and I'd really like to do so more.

Any suggestions? (preferably from a company that do lightly aged but not essential)

thanks  big_smile

Wolfetone Dr. Vintage, or (if you can find it) Holmes 450.

Re: Need a new neck pickup.

what K is it?

If you want clarity, it should not be bigger than 7.5k-ish
Lower you go k-wise the more high end it will retain. Higher k pickups get really muddy in the neck, but work well near the bridge because its closer to the bridge and more trebly, it  can afford to lose some there and have more

Dimarzio Eric Johnson Signature HB.  Designed to approximate SC sonic properties in a HB package.  Great PUP IMHO.

Re: Need a new neck pickup.

Change your cap from a .022 to a .010 or lower.  They say that it wouldn't have an effect on your tone with the tone wide open but I don't believe it.  Thats a cheap start.  Another cheap mod would be remove the Alnico II magnet and install a stronger magnet its only $5 or so and its easy.

Re: Need a new neck pickup.

Make sure the volume pot is a 500k.

Re: Need a new neck pickup.

Find a used Dimarzio Paf pro in neck position they are killer

otherwise safe bet is a Gibson burstbucker

Re: Need a new neck pickup.

I concur with the dimarzio PAF pro in the neck.  Have one in an Ibanez, sounds so good but I don't know how it would sound in a Les Paul if thats what you're playing? I've heard the Pearly Gates sounds really nice in the neck position..

Re: Need a new neck pickup.

Well if you can solder why not swap it in and find out
I have one in a Korina V , superb but I love the burstbucker in
the les paul one day I will try a swap too

Re: Need a new neck pickup.

Had to look up the value but 7.6k (no ohmmeter) I do have 500k pots in yeah. Changed them almost as soon as I bought the guitar cause the Gibson ones were terrible!

I am quite keen on the Dr Vintage pickup now.
What about Bareknuckle, anyone use them?

a one meg or even a two meg volume pot will get some more highs out of the pickup...

Re: Need a new neck pickup.

I was thinking I'd try get a 700k or something. I think 1 or 2 meg might be a bit much no?

Re: Need a new neck pickup.

2 meg would be but 1 meg still sounds good.  Thats what Eddie Van Halen used in his old Frankenstein guitars.  I had them with an SG and it was really nice with 57' classics, but hated Pearly Gates in it with the 1 meg pots.

Re: Need a new neck pickup.

First thing I do to a Les Paul is rewire it to hybrid 50's style, that way you can turn down the volume controls and keep the highs. No need for treble bleed caps. Easiest mod in the world and it instantly opens the guitar to all those classic rock sounds. Many great guitar sounds were played with loud amps turned way up and great guitars with volume turned down.

The mod is pretty easy, on the volume controls switch the tone cap leg form the left leg to the middle leg.
You'll get tone controls in series with the volume and switch, when normally the tone would run parallel.
