Topic: ClearSonic amp baffles?
Anyone use the ClearSonic baffles? If so, how do they sound?
I'm thinking about buying a set of JB's.
I play in my basement, and its very harsh and trebly compared to my friends.

A baffle takes the sound beam away, it doesn't reduce the volume, it just sends it upwards and backwards. I've made one myself and made a video when I tested it. Crappy cam and youtube noise but you'll get the idea.
I think I might have to make one of these aswell, seeing as im just after getting a marshall vintage modern 50 watt 2x12 combo for my apartment in college. Sorry to change the topic a bit but does anybody no if the Clearsonic Sorbers work well also? http://www.clearsonic.com/sorber.htm
I called ClearSonic about the Sorbers. They recommended them behind the amp.
My setup:
I have an open back 1x12 Marshall combo, and a Marshall 1/2 stack.
My basement walls have "vintage" pine paneling on them, with a plaster ceiling, and tiled floors. NOT made for
good tone.
They explained the sound waves will bounce off the plastic baffles and reflect off the wall behind the amp. The Sorbers
will stop the sound waves from bouncing off the wall into the rest of the room.
I figure I'll buy the JB baffles and use it for the combo and 1/2 stack. And a couple Sorbers too.

They are great! Use them most gigs and at home.
I've started getting the poeces together to make a homemade one. The clearsonics are quite expensive and I know someone that can get me tough/bullet proof perspex for free so just waiting for that. I heard warren hayes has been known to use a plywood board but not sure if this is true. If it is I figured some bullet proof perspex would do the trick nicely, especially when it's free.
I got Weber beam blockers for my fender blues jr, and everyone can hear that better than my other guitar player's beamy Fender HotRodDeluxe! Tried them in a 4x12 can and took them out because the cone of the speakers were bottoming out on the blockers.... I needed to add washers to keep them from touching and just never had the time.
I do have two sheets of clear that I bought from Lowes and used clear mailing tape for the hinge. I put that in front of my vertical 2x12. It cuts the the beam a little, but it also adds isolation for mic'ing.
Can't honestly see any point in using a baffle at home unless you're recording perhaps. If it's a volume issue then consider an attenuator (power brake).
In terms of cutting out the 'beam' of harsh high frequencies from the centre of the speakers, one bit of advice I was given was to put a cross of gaffer (duct) tape on the speaker cloth so the centre of the X was in the centre of the speaker (or each speaker). I've seen pro players using this trick too. It's a far bit cheaper than buying a pro level baffle and will instantly tell you if that's the solution you're looking for.
I own an attenuator. I have no problem buying a "pro level" baffle if it helps, even if its just in my basement.
Geeezz, some pedals cost more...
My guitars are "pro level" Gibson Custom Shop. Maybe I shouldn't have them either?
For me right now...it's £350 on Ultimate Att. or £120 on the baffle for my 2x12...
I know what I'll try first.
I've previous used airbrake attenuators and I still have power scaling on my main amp to reign in the volume both in and out of the house ..but I still use a plexi baffle too as I prefer the sound ..personal preference

Hey Dude - I wasn't taking a pop at you! I was just suggesting that before buying expensive it might be an idea experimenting with a simple alternative. If that's not going to float your boat, then fine spend the money honey!

Hey - that's interesting. How would you describe the sound difference? I mean is it just about cutting out 'the death beam' or is it a more tonal thing for you?
I have an Alex attenuator and PPMIV in my Marshall heads. But my basement (Man Cave) is BRIGHT. There's way too many reflective surfaces. Its more of a warm up the room thing for me.
I plan to use the Sorber's too.
I'm not in a band, but do play at jam nights. Thats what my 1x12 combo is for. Its actually a 1987x loaded into a 1x12 combo
cab with a 100w Scumback speaker.
By the way, the Alex attenuator has better tone than: Aracom, Hot Plate, Ultimate, Weber, and Dr. Z attenuators.
haha.. for my 100 watt head, I need an attenuator for most gigs.
I have an Rivera Rock Crusher attenuator, a DIY clear baffle, and I set my cabinet on an Auralex Gramma isolation riser.
This trifecta of amp setup has led to extra trips to the car at gigs, and admittedly I never bring the clear baffle to gigs... I can have the speakers face the wall if its too beamy. but I always bring the attenuator and the Gramma.
OK - so I've just ordered two sheets of 3mm perspex and some clear duct tape to build my own baffle and check out what the hype is all about! All in cost <£40. I'll let you know how I get on and post some pictures on here perhaps - if anyone is interested?
You might find 3mm to flimsy, I made two out of 3 mm and we ended up bining them. Prob ok for home use. It may sound stupid but the thickness of the baffle makes a difference to the effect. It also took us a lot of messing around to get the right height.
Sound guys go all weak at the knees when you get a baffle out, they love em.

Main reason I don't take my baffle out to gigs is because the other guitar player and the bass player don't have or use them... so what's the benefit if I'm the only one?
