Topic: Amp thoughts please

I was hoping I could possibly get some thoughts on amps.  I'm looking for a combo with 2x12's and all tube.  I'm thinking Marshall so far, and I've tried many at GC, but there's more to it than what tickles the ear in the store and what I'd be happy with over time.  I resect all the knowledge and experience in this forum so would greatly appreciate any opinions.  Thanks..

Re: Amp thoughts please

What music are you looking to play ..and where are you looking to play it ?

Re: Amp thoughts please

Thanks.....will be small clubs.  Blues, Jazz (other guitarist), classic rock.  I burned up a small VOX AC15 with a Fender Reverb.  Would like to come close to Joe's sound when needed.

Re: Amp thoughts please

Perhaps the Lazy J J80 Combo?

There is a good review in the current Lick Library Interactive Guitar Magazine.  Try this link:
http://licklibrary.ceros.com/iguitarmag … /page/100/

Also a great issue with a lot of stuff about Joe and he uses two Lazy J amps.  The article about Roy Buchanan is terrific.

Slow is smooth, smooth is fast.

If your lucky enough to find a combo 2x12 marshall silver jubilee you would be getting monster tone. Although they are hard to come by.

Silver Jubilee combos come available from time to time. This super clean one just arrived today.

Re: Amp thoughts please

For that Brit sound you can get a DSL 2x12 for short money... a Reeves Custom will run you in the low end of Boutique dollars for and hand made amp. I just go a 10 HG (first impression has been very good), love to try an 18 or 30 MK II. Of course, one of these new Cat 5 Silver Jubilee's if you can afford it (5K+), that would be something.

Fender-y tone and old Deluxe or Princeton. In the Boutique arena perhaps a Swart Atomic Space Tone or Victoria, love to try a Lazy J but the exchange rate scared me off when i contacted Jesse, really nice guy though.

Dumble clone, you just can't beat Ceriatone's price... although i know i dream about a Two Rock or Van Weelden, I think you have to be at least a guitar Demi God to get a one of these.

I actually looked into a Ceriatone 2555 that i would have sent straight to Voodoo amps for a full mod/setup, total cost would have been around 1700 USD, not right at the time but an interesting idea...

Re: Amp thoughts please

yeah what are you looking to spend?

I personally don't like new marshalls and select 90's... it just depends.

I've owned 2x12s before.... JCM900 2x12 and a peavey 5150 2x12, and I gotta say they are HEAVY. When I went to a 1x12 combo, it saved my back quite a bit.

There's just too many good amps to recommend here without knowing a price range, and if you must buy it new and from GuitarCenter.  wink

Re: Amp thoughts please

If you need something versital that can do many things then I would skip the Jub. Its a great amp, I own one and love it but its largely a one trick pony.

Re: Amp thoughts please

Rivera Quianna is a nice versatile amp.

Re: Amp thoughts please

THANKS for the replies.  Price between $1 to 2k.  Not tied to Guiter Center.....was just a good place to try a number of amps.  I just trust the experience you all have and I don't want to get a Marshall because it's what's in my head...if that makes any sense.  I tried the VOX at GC before buying....loved it in the store but after playing it over time it just fell short.

Re: Amp thoughts please

I don't have one but a friend of mine has a JCM 900 duel reverb 2x12 and I really like it. Anything that comes out of it usually sounds good. Might be a problem for jazz though. Not sure.
Definately play as many as you can or else you will end up like me with a room full of amps that I thought were the

Rivera is all I've been owning since '98. My brother is always buying up legendary amps and I get to borrow some every now and then, but none of them tempt me enough to stop gigging with my Riveras. The two separate voiced channels can give you both fender and marshall tones.

Yes if you're willing to spend $1k-$2k you can almost get any amp.
I'd definitely buy used and don't jump the gun... play a lot of amps.

Although for the money, I would get a 2x12 cab, and a Fendery head and a Marshally head.

Have you played a Budda 2x12? I know the heads are really nice. Joe used to play them on the Had To Cry Today tour.

Re: Amp thoughts please

Denny, sorry to take so long to get back to you. Why don't you check out one of the following: Metropoulos JTM 45 http://plexireplicas.com/metropoulos-am … -45-combo/  or The Fargen Mini Plex  http://www.fargenamps.com/mini-plex-mkii. The Victoria amps are really nice but are pricey.

An old SF or (better to me) BF Princeton can be had for ~ $1000. Great little amp.
