I think that some people can't get around their personal taste, and judge talent without personal bias. To say she isn't a talented singer/songwriter and doesn't deserve the success she's having just doesn't make sense to me...most musicians would love to find a singer with her voice and songwriting ability (if she wrote those songs...I'm going by your word Brack).

Have you still not found Adele's own forum yet? Perhaps you could post about Joe there...

James Blunt is still very successful

Well, yes he is, not my cup of tea, but has millions of fans and album sales around the world, and continues to have a successful career - good luck to him i say!

Here in the UK, we seem to DUMP on anything or anyone successful, or too successful - a very British disease I'm sad to say!   sad

Maybe I used a bad example, or didn't explain myself better as I actually like James Blunt, more so now that all the hoo-hah! around him has died down. Point was, first time he toured up these parts, it was Newcastle Arena, 5,000 + seater, sold out, second time, Newcastle City Hall, 2,250 seater, not sold out. Now maybe it was thought the Arena didn't suite his sound or style, but not being able to fill a venue, half the size surely indicates that the "bubble" of mainstream popularity, however contrived, has burst. These artists, who, probably through no fault of their own, who get caught-up in this, have to accept, it gives them a limited "shelf-life". Afterward, either they give up altogether or go one and make probably more satisfying music.

I usually think that a good "life-span" in the upper music eschelons is 5 years. That proves to me that they've got the "legs" to be there. If Adele can hold where she is for another couple of years, then maybe some of us will eat humble pie, and good luck to her; in the meantime, and personally, she's not my going, and believe me, I've tried to listen.

Where is the hate on Adele Joey?

All I see is criticism of the industry machine that has helped catapult her to exposure and consequent success that other equally (or more) talented and deserving artists can only dream of. And I'm right with Martin on that one.

Adele got a lucky break just as many before her and many to come will. Personally I can see she has talent, and is probably one of the more talented products of the machine in recent years. I don't need to buy her CD's or go to her gigs to recognise that though, as the machine ensures she gets radio airplay all day everyday, and huge amounts of TV exposure. Unfortunately, mass radio and TV exposure is dictated by the industry, not the viewers and listeners. The average consumer then gets presented with a very narrow choice and never get the chance to experience the countless equally deserving talents out there in the real world. Sheep follow. Consumers buy - leaving the marketing guys with smug grins on their faces as they'll no doubt get a pat on the back and an increase in their budget (Cynical? Moi?  lol )

This is the brick wall that Joe has been banging his head on for years. To my knowledge Joe has managed one five minute appearance on national free to air TV in the UK on the Jules Holland show, and that was a couple of years back. Nothing since, despite his growing success and fanbase. People who will buy only what is put in front of them are merely consumers - not music fans. I'd wager that a high percentage of Adele's CD's (again without knocking her talent) are bought that way too - in supermarkets with the weekly groceries from the limited but heavily promoted range that such stores stock.

This forum has a proud tradition of supporting and spreading the word about the many deserving acts that are struggling against the flow. To that extent, I can understand Greenose's frustration above.

I have no problem with Adele - she's probably more deserving than most of the rubbish that dominates radio and TV music these days, but she doesn't need our help.

Re: Adele

Ian (icon) - dont disagree with what you have written there; the problem is the industry not the artist, which equally is why an artist such as Adele should be defended, - she can sing live and she does write her own material, - hey Elvis would have been happy with that!!!

For years and years the industry has been manipulated by "business" people, - - The Eagles, Frank Sinatra, The Monkeys (sorry) and even Elvis can get a second mention here! So what? I guess the worry is that "real" music is taking a back seat.... - but how many people would moan on here if Joe was driven by commercial outcome rather than musical ones? - Joe has been getting a lot of mainstream radio airplay over here in the UK through his single with Beth Hart, - so he needs to pdq release a single and get some interviews on BBC Radio2, - so are his management trying to achieve that? I don't know, - maybe they do not want that sort of coverage??

Mike (banshee) interesting take on James Blunt, - my guess is that his label will get behind him again with his next album and suspect he will fill arenas again.

Greenose, - why? - There is room for everybody here, music is our passion, - and thankfully we all like different things but all agree on the ability and quality of at least one artist!

Precisely Ian, I don't hate Adele either, but I dislike a music industry that makes her a star as opposed to acts that I feel are more talented. I also feel she's exposed enough to warrant a thread on Joe's forum. As I said a thread on her forum (if she has one) about Joe, might be more beneficial.

Really? I love Simon - he's one of the biggest reasons I now dismiss mainstream popular music and go out on a Saturday night in search of genuine talent. I owe him a lot!  wink

I don't necesarily buy into the "real music" argument - it is what it is - but I think there comes a stage where "celebrity" (a term I do hate) wins out over talent (Jedward anybody?).
I totally take your point about commercial outcome verses musical output. I've spoken to numerous artists on the blues club scene here who feel really priviliged to make a decent living doing what they love to do and playing to club audiences. The way I see it, the greater their success, the less control they have over what they do. It's a double edged sword really. The more successful you get the more other people want a piece of you. The more of a "celebrity" they become, the more the musical output seems to suffer. And did I mention the tabloids? Best not go there eh?

I'm not really one for the big venue experience either - when Joe played that arena tour over here last year I was beginning to wonder (despite being front row centre), but then thankfully he scaled it back next tour. Seems the comedians are taking over the arenas anyway  roll . You wouldn't find me sat at the back of Wembley Arena listening to a guy telling jokes - even if you paid me.

I honestly do not see the need to post about Adele on Joe's forum, it's hardly a similar style of music. Brack if you want to congratulate Adele on her success why not spend some of that eternal time that you do online and find if she's got a fan forum you can copy and paste your lifted but unsourced quotes from. Maybe now she's playing the RAH you might go and see her live, since you didn't go to see Joe live before he played there. I saw you commented on Pete's videos of Henrik Freischlader, did you actually go and see him, or just sit at home and wait for the youtube clips? Rather than collecting 4,500 more posts of nonsence why not get out there and support live music at a local level and maybe tell us about someone we've not heard about before?

Both Martin and Duncan have implicated a lack of talent (or not having the talent to make it to the level she's at). My comments were directed to those posts...
