Topic: New pedal day: Celestial Effects Taurus OD

Hey guys, just got a Celestial Effects Taurus Overdrive yesterday. I already use their Virgo/Scorpio/Aquarius pedals. The Scorpio stays on 100% of the time, and the Virgo works great as the dirty channel some (mostly fender users or low gain marshalls or any amp that is too loud or has too much headroom; think OCD but better!) may not have. I was trying to use some clean and treble boosts with my Rocker 30 and it was just not doing the trick for me. The Taurus cuts really well and with a a powerful EQ and wide gain range, and being able to run at 18 Volts, it's a damn great pedal making awesome sound. I am using it for lead boosts. I believe it to be in the "souped up TS" pedal area but with a lot more gain and boost capabilities.  Played it at rehearsal yesterday and it really is doing the job in spades.  Can't wait to tweak it further!

Re: New pedal day: Celestial Effects Taurus OD

Those sound like some great pedals.  I am a big fan of the OCD through a Fender amp so I would love to hear the one that you feel is better than the OCD.  It is also hard to beat a really good tube screamer type pedal.  The best I have found is the Fulltone Robin Trower Overdrive.  I would like to hear it in comparison with your Taurus.  Regardless, it is a great feeling to get a pedal that actually does what it is supposed to do.  Some are overhyped and just don't deliver the goods.

Re: New pedal day: Celestial Effects Taurus OD

Funny thing is that the guys in the Orange forum don't believe me that it sounds good, because according to them no pedal sounds good with the Rocker 30.  Silly.  I am going to try in the near future to do some sound or video demo of these pedals.  Hard to beat what the jetcity music dudes are doing as far as video demos; for example, there is the Virgo in the video below.  GMD also reviewed the virgo, taurus, and scorpio.

Just got sorted with an overdrive I'm happy with a Rothwell Tornado, but think I'll have a look at that Scorpio, sounds good.

Re: New pedal day: Celestial Effects Taurus OD

I have found Orange to be some of the most pedal unfriendly amps you can buy (only beaten by Engl right now)...

A Rocker, Thunderverb and Rockerverb were all terrible when been pushed by a FD2, Trex Moller etc...
The Rockerverb sounded the best out the lot...and that of course...was with the amp itself.

I run a couple of Petersburg P-100s...and they just take every pedal like it's another colour to the palette...a simple circuit to say the least...
I have no idea what is in those Oranges...but I'll take my apples any day...

Well done on getting the sounds you want.

Re: New pedal day: Celestial Effects Taurus OD

It seems to be pickier than all of the other amps I have owned. It likely has something to do with how the preamp section is designed.  The Scorpio boost works great with it my making the tone more... Hi-Fi, for lack of better description and the Taurus makes it a big thick lead tone.  Again, i have a unorthodox setup unlike any R30 owner I have come across.

Wasn't the Chrysalis supposed to be an "orange amp" type tone?  I remember seeing demos and listening many moons ago and thought it was a great sound.

The blurb on the website (and in the manual) says that it's not supposed to sound like any particular vintage amp, but like a vintage amp as heard on a record...all I know is it's absolutely brilliant smile

Check it out - www.earthquakerdevices.com/devices/chrysalis.htm
