Topic: The humbuckers that I make (video clips)

here are some videos of my first customer playing his Epi SG day 1 he had my new pickups. He took his burstbuckers out of this guitar in favor of mine... which I thought was a huge compliment. The band he's in is pretty psychedelic rock. I see it as a cross between Sabbath and Heart. wink

Nic, very cool!!  Now work on a Firebird pickup that sounds like that and I will buy some from you.  I tried to talk Lollar and some others to make a FB pickup (in size) that had a big sound, to no avail...  Next stop is DiMarzio!

Re: The humbuckers that I make (video clips)

Thanks, I'm getting people asking me about them quite a bit now.... so I'll probably make a little website.

Was thinking about calling them epoch pickups.

Definition: a period of time in history or a person's life, typically one marked by notable events or particular characteristics : the Victorian epoch. (cool association!)
• the beginning of a distinctive period in the history
• Geology a division of time that is a subdivision of a period and is itself subdivided into ages, corresponding to a series in chronostratigraphy : the Pliocene epoch.

Re: The humbuckers that I make (video clips)

Man, that SG sounded great!  Or maybe he was just that great of a player.  Either way I need to get a set of those epoch pickups!  I'm going to contact you in a month or so weather I have my SG or not.  I'll drop them in a Strat if I have to!

Re: The humbuckers that I make (video clips)

Very cool!  I definitely hear some Tony Iommi in that guitarist's playing, like you mentioned.  Hail Black Sabbath! -S

I have a double fat Strat if your interested.

Re: The humbuckers that I make (video clips)

I make single coils for the strat as well.  cool  I have a set in one of my strats. Very balanced and stratty. It was my first run, so the middle doesn't have a reverse wind reverse polarity RWRP for hum canceling... totally 50's. All three are A5 pickups wound between 6k-6.25k with the hottest one at the bridge.

Re: The humbuckers that I make (video clips)

Send a couple different sets to ToneQuest Report for a review. If they like them and write a favorable review, you'll have orders out the wahzoo!

Re: The humbuckers that I make (video clips)

Thanks for the offer, but I'm hoping to buy my old SG back in October from my friend.  She has a son that plays and 2 or three years ago he wanted an SG.  Now he's going to College and needs all the money he can.

Re: The humbuckers that I make (video clips)

Unfortunately I was asked to take the videos down. The guitarist didn't like the performance. He DID, love the pickups. He's going to send me some sound clips of my pickups vs. his burstbuckers that he took out just before installing mine.  cool

Bummer!  I thought it was nice, but I too am super self critical, considering the copious amounts of slop I deliver during live shows.  But I just shake my hair around and try to make up for it  big_smile  Nic, in your opinion, do you think it possible to get through the magic of engineering, a mini HB-sized pickup tonal characteristics of a proper PAF?

Where there's a will, there's a way. And in my case, there's the hope of a happy accident that can easily be replicated.  lol
Mini humbucker like a LP Deluxe or Firebird?

Well, by design I know that the FB PUP's are different, using blades and Alnico V's, but it would be cool to somehow keep the FB cover, with the innards of something... well, something!  cool

They probably use Alnico5 blades sideways like you said so they don't have to use pole pieces. two rows of pole pieces might be too wide for the mini HB size. I've never done a mini HB before, but would like to. I know I could probably do a miniHB that is like a P-90 that hum cancels when it's in the middle position. the humbucker that doesn't mirror how they are already design will take some head scratching. LIke you said, as long as we can put the normal cover over the top, nobody's the wiser!

Re: The humbuckers that I make (video clips)

I am currently using the Seymour Duncan Seymourized SM-3 mini HB pickup on the bridge position of my FB VII.  It is their highest output mini.  It sounds good, but to me, even compared with a DiMarzio virtual PAF, which is an all time favorite (along with the DiMarzio Steve Morse and the Sheptones I used to have in a LP), it sounds... well it sounds small and narrow (for lack of better terms).  The current production FB pickups (well at least since 2002) gibson puts on firebirds are just awful for the bridge position.  I like them fine on the neck.

I had not seen those.  I generally correlate cheap with bad when it comes to HB's and guitar parts in general.  I could be wrong...

Re: The humbuckers that I make (video clips)

I have had some good pickups from these guys.

I've tried the Dream 90's and the FAT PATs with great luck.
