Topic: What type of single coil pickups do JB use in the black strat

Hello, my first thread here.
Hope the question has'nt been beat to death yet.

What type of single coil pickups did Joe use in his black strat when he did the video
"if heartaches were nickels'  ?
Were they A2 or A5 magnet pickups ?

I assume you are talking about this video (or at least the same guitar):

If so, those pickups are Lace Sensor Golds. The company doesn't seem to specify the magnet type or strength anywhere, but the design is very unique. You can read about them here:

Hope that helps  smile

Yes , thank you.
I was'nt sure if those were active or passive at first.

Would you know what he used in his Gold Flake strat ?

The Lace sensors are passive, but the guitar in question is a Eric Clapton Signature model.  It has an active mid range boost that requries a 9 volt battery.  It also features a passive TBX control switch that boosts the treble by cutting the bass, or boosts the bass by cutting the treble depending which way you turn the control.

I'm not sure whats in Goldie but I'm sure there is some info on that somewhere on the forum.

Magnets, I'm finding make very little difference other than voodoo.

I'd invite the layman to discriminate between my A2's vs. my A5's that are both 8k.

Don't get me wrong, you can hear between ceramic and alnico 2-5, but not so much ceramic vs. A8.

+EMG's are active and GREAT for if you run a lot of effects and pedals.

The biggest thing is what does the guitar sound like acoustically? and you do need to brighten a dead sounding guitar, or calm down a guitar that's too bright or bassy?
