Topic: Joe Bonamassa & Gov't Mule @ House of Blues Sunset

fabulous tone!  anyone know what gear joe was using during this set?  the tone here perfectly demosntrates what i love most about joe's tone.  it's dark and articulate yet soft.  and there's a kind of nasal quality to it that i REALLY love.  sounds to like the van weelden or jb-100, possibly using the pork loin, too.  i don't know.  anyone know?  man that's a great tone.

hopefully joe sees this and replies!!!

whoops, forgot the clip:

Welcome to the forum Guitar Guy. It might be the rig he used at the Baked Potato. The vid that is associated with Joe and Warren trading licks is pretty sweet too.

thanks for the reply.  i'll check oiut the baked potato clips.  that trading lick clips is sweet, too.  warren's tone is sweet, but joe's tone just has such a supple weight to it.  that weight, suppleness and definition is what i'm after!

Sometimes you cant win for trying and sometimes you cant lose for just plugging into anything thats there.  The amp was a Fender Twin reissue with a Simple Tubescreamer and two cables..   Now the guitar on the other hand...  Lets just say Its not a reissue..
I had a blast and loved Jamming with Warren and Brad..  Two super cool players and super nice people.

i give up! it really is all in the hands which, unfortunately, means i need a hand transplant stat.  or maybe it's the cables!!!  what kind of cable were you running?  i'm kidding.  thanks for the reply.  i think what i'm learning is that maybe i need to change my approach to gear (in addition to practicing more).  i think i'm a fan of overdrive pedals and amps, but maybe i need to spend more time cranking a clean amp and pushing the front end w/ an od style boost (ts, for example).

the search continues......thanks again.  i kind of feel like i just have a short phone call w/ joe.  a little joe, some ghost adventures on tv, my trusty larrivee rs-4, a little cocobon red wine.  only thing beats that is being on stage!

Re: Joe Bonamassa & Gov't Mule @ House of Blues Sunset

Its not that, never give up the search for your ideal gear.   I have a particular sound in my head..  It doesn't matter whether I have my full set up with 4 separate amps or a like last night a reissue twin reverb leftover from the competition .. I just keep turning dials until I get the sound I like.   The one thing I will say about the dark cleaner thing.  It requires power...   a low wattage amp doesn't do it.  It would be too distorted and thin.   You need 80 to 100 watts of clean tube power before you employ the Tubescreamer.
The amp was set at 6, and the tube screamer was set at  Drive 10, Level 10 and the  tone control was barely on..
Hope that helps... Its a life long quest that never ends..

Hmm - yeah I noticed from your pedal board at the Adelaide show (which I am guessing is similar to your BCC pedalboard) that your TS was set to 10.

So do you mean that you set the amp to the loudest clean sound possible before kicking in the TS to push it?  I always assumed that with a 100W amp, it would start to break up at higher dial settings, whereas a lower wattage amp would start to break up a lot earlier?

helpful indeed.  i'll try the clean approach out when i get my new custom amp next week.  since you're a fellow gearhead, i've included pics below.  amp-wise, my rig runs two amps--a 30 watt evil robot and the 100 watt welagen ods.  the evil robot is much more special than you might imagine.  it can just be cranked and sound great for rock (think craig ross), but mike it and run it through an efficient speaker and set it for a smoother and cleaner tone...it's pretty special.  the welagen is just magic od-wise (i haven't spent much time w/ the clean because i'm od focused), but i've not gotten to play it yet since the final voicing.  i'll play w/ the clean more when i get it.

anywho, thanks for the replies.  hope you enjoy the pics.

Ah the fender twin...such a legendary amp used by so many legendary players...the Beatles, Clapton, B.B. King, Albert Collins  I heard Robben Ford talk about the twin being the launching ground for the Dumble amps.

Such a minimalist rig and sounds so amazing.  I love the clarity and note articulation.  Of course Joe played a little part in that  tongue

Re: Joe Bonamassa & Gov't Mule @ House of Blues Sunset

An amazingly vocal tone...more than ever...

My favorite Strat or LP, through my 2558 Jub & 57 Twin along with 2 or 3 pedals (fuzz, wah, OD) and I'm home baby!!!  big_smile

I must have an Evil Robot...they sound phenomenal. A tone that's in my head for sure.
