Topic: Tone help!

I want to achieve Joe's tone but I can't get it. I have a DigiTech RP150 and I'm running through a Bugera V55. I have Marshall models and multiple overdrives and delays but they don't sound like Joe. And are Jensen P12Qs similar to Ev12Ls? Thanks!!!

Re: Tone help!

Practice, Practice, Practice

...and when you think you have things nailed...

PRACTICE MORE   ;-)

It's gonna be tough to pull off with modeling gear although I've come close with the Line 6 stuff (Pod Farm 2.5 to be exact)...

Regarding the p12q's as compared to ev12l's....they are like apples and oranges.

Re: Tone help!

yeah it's probably going to be difficult to sound like him with that setup...but then again why not try to find your own sound?

I just thought it would be fun. I actually do have my own tone for bands and stuff but I like to try new stuff.

ah ok that's cool man...well as long as your mids and lows are set quite high....and your treble is set low then that'll get you going

I just can't get the right overdrive tone. My mids are maxed, bass is at 8, treble is at 3. Also I use an Epiphone SG if that counts for anything.

i use a ts808 reissue and a blackstar ht overdrive and it gets me pretty close

Re: Tone help!

At the end of the day no matter how hard you try you are not going to get an amp joe doesnt play, a guitar joe doesnt play, and your hands which Joe doesnt have to sound like Joe.

Its not going to happen.

But good luck anyway.

+1  It's still fun to try, though...

Re: Tone help!

Try turning your amps master all the way up and use the power amp side of your amp more then your pre amp.  Its hard to sound like Joe in some cases because Joe uses multiple amps.  Drop the Digitech altogether because it is limiting your guitar signal to your amp because it too has a master volume.  If you do need effects you can try to use it but I really think the SG and straight into the amp will get you closer to his tone then anything else you've got from your discription.

If you listen to Joes solo stuff he's got tons of high cost gear, but if you look at how simiple of a rig he brings with him as a guest its really just him a les paul, an amp and maybe even a boost pedal or something.  For example a few years back Joe was in Paris playing a set with his girlfriend.  He was playing his newer Bonaburst a boss blues driver and a Hot rod deluxe amp.  Everyone on the board was saying "Joe your tones awesome what did you do to get that sound?"  and he replied on here it was his girlfriends amp his les paul and a boss blues driver level was all the way up, drive was all the way up, and tone was turned all the way down!  It sounded like Joe and other then his guitar he had $700 worth of equipment bought new.

So to sum up what everyone is saying on here its wonderful to try to copy joes tone but remember that phrasing is the key and the only way to get joes tone down is to phrase like joe.  The only way to do that is Practice.  More then Practice then you ever really wanted.  Remember the people who are famous for playing guitar didn't just luck out and get famous they did what they could  to get where they are.  Joe said in a video once he practices like 6 hours a day besides what he does at shows.  Thats like 8 hours a day which is more then most people can say they do in a week myself included these days.

Trust me. I wish I could crank my amp. and I almost have Joe's phrasing down. Thanks!

That's worth more than gear.

I know. I've been playing for 3 years and i can't believe i've come this close to being almost as good as Joe.

Re: Tone help!

make sure that you're rolling the tone on your bridge pickup back a bit to take some of the grit out of the tone and round it out. You might be better off modeling his tone (on your modeling device) after a fender as well. Although Joe plays Marshalls, it's easier to get his "dumble-y" tone from a fender amp since they sound a bit more round.

"The way I like to look at it is....if that's the last time I ever got to play, I'd better give it everything I've got." -SRV
