Re: Irene!!

Sad for those that had losses. PM's from forum friends here in the DC and Maryland area show no power and lots of limbs down but otherwise ok. Spider's last report had high water in the creek and rising. Hope he escaped ok. Whew! It could have been a lot worse. I'll take our quakes. At least it is localized vs. half the darn country flooded.

Re: Irene!!

Here in central PA, we had three inches of rain, sustained winds of 20-30 with gusts to 50 (judging from the noise Irene made Saturday night/Sunday morning), and only about eight hours without power. The power company was so swamped with calls, we weren't even able to get through to report our outage until around 1PM.

No damage to the homestead, nothing blew away except some perfectly good leaves on some perfectly good trees. One of our neighbors did have one of their trees split in two, but that was the only real damage in our neighborhood that I could see. Still, I was surprised at the intensity, probably the closest we've had to a "direct hit" in 20-some years in this area.

Don't tell me UK news agencies are more sensational than Fox Network here in the states. They are who I was referring to. The media is vital to preparing for these acts of mother nature, but when they do marathon reporting 24/7 it's a bit much. As you recently found out over there that digging too deep is criminal.

Glad to hear Kiddo. When you think of Hurricanes you think about the coast taking the brunt, but this one wreaked havoc way inland with the amount of moisture it unleashed. Heat wave, earthquake, & a hurricane, I think you east coasters have had enough for awhile.....ya think????

Cathy got home after a ridiculously long drive from Bluestock to find the power off. It obviously wasn't restored before she went to bed - fingers crossed that it'll be back on when she gets up this morning in a couple of hours from now.

Re: Irene!!

No power at my house since Sunday at 10am (I am currently at a place with wifi).  Possible it won't be back until the weekend.  Rather annoying because all the "nicer" towns have theirs back and parts of my area (including two houses down from me and behind me) have theirs.  We have a generator running our fridge and the neighbors and filled with 3 household's food.

The most frustrating part is seeing minimal tree damage near us but  still no power.  No repair trucks since either since Sunday.

At least we didn't lose anything major like so many others - so sorry for you Jenni.  Cathy you are so far in the woods you probably won't have power until winter!

Re: Irene!!

The weird thing is that there was no flooding anywhere near Cathy, and there didn't appear to be major tree damage in the vicinity either (could have been cleared earlie,r) while at the same time her sister-in-law, who usually gets flooded when anything happens, has had no power cut at all. I'm hoping that Cathy will stay there instead of sitting at home in the dark, reading by candlelight, with no coffee or tea (horror!).

Her laptop is charged now, so she'll probably look in pretty soon and talk for herself.  wink

Re: Irene!!

Finally power is back after 97 1/2 hours!  We were lucky because we have a generator - we were actually running our fridge with 3 households worth of food and the neighbors fridge, but boy did I miss this place.  Making me rethink my internet connections in the future.

I hope the rest of you who have had problems are getting better - Vermont is really slammed, they have had to airlift supplies into some areas.

Now please Katia stay away.

Re: Irene!!

*sigh* Very saddened to learn of a lost home for Jenni! yikes  Lots of friends I know had bad flooding.  Bad as in even if seen flooding semi-regularly, not like this time.  All over New York.  Vermont's lovely seclusion and semi-isolation certainly not helping them in their hours of need! Somehow, I am optimystic [sic] enough to predict an extra special fall foliage season in Vermont this year.  Vicarious damage tour coupled with beauty, tourism can inject rebuilding funds for some?  East had enough?  Maybe.  Winter is still a ways off, the way things have gone this year there.... ai yi yi.
Speaking of Cathy, didn't she and Bob head up to Bluestock?  I heard they cancelled Sunday and doubled up Saturday and moved camping indoors.

Re: Irene!!

Pretty bad here in New Jersey, I made out ok. Only reason why I did alright is due to the fact that I do not live close to a river. Lost power for about two days. Our local power substation was under 3 - 4 feet of water. All of the Jersey rivers have been full since mid summer. To get the power back on, they had to re-route it. They are saying it could take up to a year or so to fix the actual power station itself.

The lower level of the house got some water seeping in through a wall. That got to the nice new carpet we had down there. I spent Sunday night tearing up the carpet. Other than that, I can't complain at all. I feel lucky to believe alive. There are still some people around here with no power and some who are surrounded by the flood waters.

Yeah much of Jersey (especially southern) being flat and and dry sandy loam underneath...not pretty.  Hopefully gone before turning into massive ice rinks.

Thanks for the bah bah bah black sleep bahs Jane...although I don't see what you are referring to...
I was greatly focused on going to Bluestock up until near deadline, but couldn't do, yet not due to weather, so had a depressive state impediment to reading anything about it...until now!  wink

Re: Irene!!

Finally got my power back tonight about 8:00 PM after losing it Saturday at 3:30 PM. Have never seen so many trees blown down and branches every where. Not a lot of damage from wind but one gust at the airport reached 71 MPH with 6 inches of rain. The power outages in central Virginia was the big story here with 150,000 people still with no power.

Re: Irene!!

I'm safe and sound with power, water and phone!!! I'm heartbroken for Jen. This storm did tons of damage. Glad to hear everybody else is well. I really lucked out. I live in the forest yet no trees fell near the house. But driving to and from my Sister-in-law's house for morning coffee, showers, hauling water, candles...well, it gets old after 6 days. The frig has been emptied. The freezer is re-icing it's contents so it can also be emptied prior to tomorrow's dump run.
As for my storm experience..It was the best I ever had!! Hunter N.Y. got the most rain for the entire State!! I'll write more about Bluestock later, but I think Blues Wax does a fine job for now..
