Topic: The Aristocrats

I know that this technically belongs int the Other Artists section, but the new song is so good that I didn't wan't it to get lost over there. Guthrie Govan has a new group called The Aristocrats. There is a free download link for one of their songs on their site. Sounds pretty good to me.

Re: The Aristocrats

It's always a matter of one's own opinion how good another artist or song is, therefor it should be in the other artist section. In other words, it wouldn't be good if everyone put there favorite other artist stuff here in general topics.

Re: The Aristocrats

son and I just love Guthrie, sounds like a trip to Atlanta. Would somebody go ahead and move this so we can discuss further, thanks.

Mods must be busy Wharris. Just delete the topic and move it to other artists. There seems to be some interest. Me too. smile

Re: The Aristocrats

does sound like some Steve Morse and maybe a little Satriani, but I cannot tell a whole lot from just pieces or one song off a CD. After hearing him on Six String Theory and others it looks like this is something to purchase. look forward to hearing the whole of it on some really decent speakers.

Re: The Aristocrats

All three of those guys are among my favorites on their instruments.  Especially Guthrie - his album Erotic Cakes (Simpson's reference) from a years back is among my favorite instrumental albums of all time.  He has unbelievable chops, but everything he does is interesting and musical.  He's a fusion guy who really pushes the "rock" half of fusion.

Can't wait for the Aristocrats album, it's going to be amazing.  There are youtube videos of the three of them playing live, and plenty of them individually.  Check 'em out.

They're playing at Martyr's in Chicago - I used to live down the street from there.  Wish I could go, so hopefully they'll make it down to Orlando some day.

Re: The Aristocrats

Just saw these guys live Saturday night in a little bar outside Orlando.  $20, less than 100 people in the audience, literally standing right in front of the stage 10 feet away from each of them.  It was amazing.  I love their albums, Guthrie's solo stuff, and the live clips I've seen on youtube, but live it a whole other level.  The interaction between the players and the humor they put in is just unbelievable.  All three are just amazing players and it was such a joy to see them perform live.  In my top 5 shows of all time.  Afterwards they all came out and took every photo, signed every CD or guitar, and mingled with the crowd for a long time.  Very personable and cool.

If you're at all interested in instrumental music that's a bit "out of the box" I would say jump at any chance you get to see them.  You'll be blown away.  Lots of clips on youtube, and they released a live DVD not too long ago.  Their new album "Culture Clash" came out last week and it's great.

Re: The Aristocrats

Guthrie is just on another level to any other guy out there.  The new album is great, maybe even a little more 'obscure' than the 1st, but the musicianship is beyond compare.  Like you, 'Erotic Cakes' is up there with my fave instrumental albums.

Have you heard Electricguitaristry by Steffen Schackinger?  It will be right up your street if you like ECakes.  Plenty of Youtube Clips available.

This is just wonderful

Thanks for the tip - I'll check it out when I get a chance.

I recently started getting into Greg Howe as well.  I new the name and kind of knew what he did, but didn't really listen to any of his stuff until recently.  Amazing player.

Re: The Aristocrats

Greg Howe was the original choice for the Aristocrats and was scheduled to play their debut gig at NAMM 2011, but couldn't make it and dropped out last minute. Guthrie was recommended to Brian and turned up, had a couple of hours rehearsal and that was that.  Here is one of the clips of Waves from that show - When Guthrie plays 'that lick' at around 3:00 ,  Marco's face is a picture.

Back onto Schackinger, I rate his album maybe even better than Cakes.  The playing is just stunning and the compositions brilliant (maybe because that's what he really is).  Here's another one.  Let us know what you think !
