Topic: JB Tone On Vox...?

Hey guys, I have a important question I need help with. I have a Vox Valvtronix VT50 and for some reason I cannot get a good JB tone from it. I use a Epiphone Les Paul Custom. Im trying to get the sound from when Mr. Bonamassa did the interviews with Guitar Center... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tHx97gm … ure=relmfu  (around 2:50). You need another amp to go with the Vox.  Set the Vox Clean, and Set the next amp Marshall 80's style distortion.  You need to run both and maybe have some delay in the clean amp.  For the best advice for this refer to the top of the Joe's Guitars, Amps and Gear page where it has Joes Guitar tips.

But I just dont have the money to buy a new amp right now...

You may have to imagine the 2nd amp part then (and the sound that goes with it).  Just work on technique as best you can to coax some Joe tone from your fingers.  It's a part of the sound you are looking for.

Delay and level of gain play a big part as well. Maybe even some room reverb to expand the sound to make up for only one amp. Make no mistake, a lot of tone is in the fingers.

First of all, dknight is right, work on technique. It helps a lot. Learn Joe's style. It will shine through no matter what gear he uses. His vibrato is something you can work on.

For your guitar and amp, I suggest having delay and reverb on a JCM800 setting for the VT50. Play with enough gain for a saturated lead and see if the amp cleans up when you lessen the volume and tone on your guitar. Play with your guitar's volume and tone somewhere bet 6-8.

The second amp isn't always necessary. Joe sounded like Joe plugged straight into a Bluesbreaker or a Tweed Twin.

I dont mean to rag on your gear... but the amp is going to be difficult to get a good thick sounding tone from.

I had a valvetronix.  I've had Twin's, CC2 AC30 and AC15, and now a Fender Vibrolux and a AC15hw.

You will have a hard time finding good thick overdrives with that amp. I would suggest that you either get a new amp... or invest in a nice overdrive pedal.  The FUCHS Plush Drive is not that expensive and it has lots of flexability.  You will find it easier to get thick creamy overdriven sounds with that pedal than others. 

Maybe a Fulltone Fulldrive?

Stay away from treble boosters or marshall like pedals as they add too much treble to your already trebley amp. 

Solid state amps are great practice amps and can be great live amps...  But trying to get one to sound like a great tube amp is like trying to get your honda civic to handle like a Ferrari.  I am not saying the valvetronix cant sound good... They can get some great tones... But it will not sound like Joe's $20,000 rig.
