Topic: Chantel McGregor - The CD thread

While studying for her music degree, Chantel McGregor started out her music career playing in the clubs and bars of the north of England, and very soon began carving out a reputation as one of the new rising stars of the rock blues circuit. Chantel went on to graduate with a First Class Honours degree in Popular Music, with record marks, at the Leeds College of Music in 2009. With a degree now under her belt, Chantel was now able to concentrate full time on music and gigging, and begun blazing a trail up and down the UK, night after night with her three-piece band, wowing audiences with her virtuoso playing. The long awaited debut album, Like No Other, was released last month.

The album consists of twelve songs. Nine originals and three covers. Robin Trower's Daydream and Sonny Boy Williamson's Help Me have both been cornerstones of the live set in recent years. The third of the covers, Fleetwood Mac's Rhiannon was introduced into the live set as a solo acoustic number at the end of last year. Of the twelve songs, five of them are acoustic including Cat Song, a two minute whirlwind of a stomp.

It would have been easy for Chantel to make an album that is a showcase for her jaw dropping talent as a guitarist, but Chantel's playing is actually quite restrained for the most part. She does not succumb to any temptation to over-play, and strikes just the right balance between power and finesse. The focus is on the quality of the songs themselves. And it's here that she excels. As a writer and performer of classic pop songs, a great talent is revealed as a singer-songwriter where the focus shifts to Chantel's passionate vocals, and of course, as a rock/blues musician where Chantel has made her name through the electrifying full on rock of the live shows. There is a huge variety of songs on the album with Chantel seemingly having the ability to draw inspiration from anywhere within the vast universe of rock music. And sounding a complete natural at whatever she turns her hand to. The end result is an inspired collection of songs drawing from rock, pop, prog and blues.

A few personal highlights would have to include the stripped down version of Rhiannon. Accompanied by special guest Jocasta Whippy on the Cello, it's a stripped down, atmospheric, acoustic take on the song. And with a vocal of stunning beauty. Screams Everlasting is another beautiful acoustic song and has a heart melting vocal. It ends with a smouldering slow burning solo which climbs and rises like a phoenix as Chantel switches to electric guitar to close out the song. Freefalling has a great chorus and middle eight and sounds even better with the addition of string harmonies. And Daydream, with a long instrumental closing section is a mesmeric piece of playing. The bass, drums and organ taking you down into deep alpha, holding you there, and then Chantel's guitar takes over as she puts you under a spell and leads you on a journey through the mind for the remaining ten minutes of the song. The solo builds, oscillates, and then swirls into a crescendo of sound as Chantel shifts gears and cuts loose as she unleashes some blistering soloing before slowing it down again and bringing a true epic to a close.

Chantel McGregor is a proper vocalist. She has a pure, distinctive voice full of passion and a real natural warmth. Her delivery is crystal clear throughout the album.

Chantel has assembled some high quality musicians to help make this album. Robin Trower's bandmates Livingstone Brown on bass and keyboards, and Chris Taggart on drums. And credit to Livingstone Brown for his outstanding production work.

Clocking in at nearly 64 minutes, Chantel McGregor has set a very high standard with this album. It will appeal to a very wide audience of all ages. It's very radio friendly and full of catchy, melodic hooks and choruses. There is something there for everyone to enjoy, and lots for most people to enjoy.

This is an album that will stand the test of time, a timeless classic that is sure to be judged as one of the great debut albums. The album is available direct from Chantel's website at http://www.chantelmcgregor.com

Re: Chantel McGregor - The CD thread

Her version of Trower's "Daydream" is mesmerising and her vocals throughout the album are terrific. However, I just cannot listen to the opening track "Fabulous", too much like Shania Twain. Away to play the cd again......................

Re: Chantel McGregor - The CD thread

Thanks for posting a great set of vids from the Boom Boom Club. I have to own up that I did not realise at the gig itself, but Chantel changed lots of the words to Caught Out. The, er, character in the song, "Mr Know It All" suddenly became "Mr I Know Everything". But the message, just like the song, remains the same.

Roger, I've just been looking around your excellent website. Very interesting, and I'll be tuning in on a regular basis.

Sitting next to Pete last night it was fascinating to see how it's done, Rick. As he's now run out of hands we'll have to buy him a headcam so he can have three angles to choose from.  lol

Thanks for this upload of "Screams", Pete. I managed to catch it before leaving home this morning. Just beautiful.

I'll try to post something more later, but for now I'll just say that Chantel's playing was streets ahead of the last time I saw her, which was in front of a small audience of around 30-40 people. Last night's gig at the New Crawdaddy Blues Club, Billericay, Essex, was sold out and Chantel really seemed to "feed off" the 200 or so that were packed into the room. Chantel appeared to benefit from the lift that the larger audience provided and her playing was simply amazing. Steve, who's probably seen Chantel more than any other unrelated person, confirmed that many of the songs and solos were the best performances he's seen.

Hopefully, Pete will have some more videos uploaded for us soon and you'll be able to see what I'm talking about. Chantel's playing on Daydream from her new CD, to name just one number, and her interpretation of Mountain Time were stunning and had me glancing at Steve with a big grin and a "Wow"!  big_smile

Re: Chantel McGregor - The CD thread

It was great to meet up with Phil and Pete at Chantel's gig last night. And thanks to Phil for saving me a front row seat. After getting delayed and arriving a bit later than normal, I felt almost embarrassed to take one of the best seats in the house when there wasn't a spare seat to be had, and barely any standing room either. And this was before the support band (The Heaters were excellent) had even started.

I completely agree with Phil's assessment of the gig. Chantel gets so inspired by that connection she gets with her audience, especially when it's a sell out and everyone is so up for it. And last night was one of those nights.

Whenever I have seen Chantel before, her opening salvo has always been Bridge To Better Days. But last night she changed it to Had To Cry Today. This has normally been the encore when she's been able to fit it into the set list. Sometimes it can be difficult to fit this one, along with Mountain Time and Daydream into the same set. Even a two hour set. And Bridge found a home in the middle of the set.

The performances last night of Mountain Time and Daydream were as good as I've seen. And I loved the searing soloing on Help Me. And I also enjoy Chantel's acoustic work equally as much as the full on electric work. The gig was as good as the one at the Boom Boom Club in April.

It was indeed fascinating to also watch Pete at work with his cameras. The precision of an expert craftsman and deep levels of concentration. A superb vid of Screams, one of my favourite songs on the album.

Thanks again to Phil and Pete. It was a great night.

Re: Chantel McGregor - The CD thread

Been listening to Chantel's album this week, it is one of the best of the year, really strong and emotional and a fine production too, had a look at Pete's video's (the guy is taking it to another level) great stuff buddy, Wow! Chantel live is a force to be reconed with oozing class and finesse, i remember way back from when i saw her in 2006 (remember Burning Hell Manchester C  wink  ) raw and fiesty, thats still there but now Chantel is a very accompolished Live Act with a full Rock/Blues set
"Like No Other" has So Many tasty tunes on it, Love "Fabulous" a slice of Pop/Rock it is so catchy and dancable, then the dark sound of "I'm No Good For You" with her sweet voice, it's a great song, "Caught Out" is shades of a Zeppelin with a groove
i like "Cat Song" it's like Chantel's "Woke Up Cat Napping" and is foot tapping supremo, "Screams Everlasting" Chantel's voice haunts me here, it is a beautiful song and a just listen in silence tune as with Rhiannon, really superb songwriting and arrangement. and i love "Not Here With Me" too it is another piece of haunting music, she has a brilliant Stevie Nicks type vocal that you hear clarity on and very listenable
Highly Highly Recommended to the unfamilar, Check this CD Out peeps

gonna catch her the night before Joe's Hammersmith show, looking forward to that, do you owe me a drink C ?    big_smile

Re: Chantel McGregor - The CD thread

Up very early for a customer but before leaving I checked my em and there was Pete's latest upload. Wow!!! Rushed job? I stand amazed and the bar is raised again. Just a stunning cover of Joe, with her own touch as it should be. This lady is going places. I sit in envy of your varied and impressive talent over there across the pond. A paucity of local shows in the genre here with only the occasional tour to look forward to. (and the Spud thanks to Joe.  wink ) Maybe a couple of us can pool our shots for a multicam production... We can ship the raw vids to Pete for production work and editing.
