Topic: Violin Tone - Missing Link

I just can't seem to quite get there through my old Fender amps, although they sound great on about anything else. Is a Marshall plexi an absolute must to get the violin tone?  (I have a Butler tube driver and a decent delay. No tape echo though)

Re: Violin Tone - Missing Link

Do you mean rolling the volume pot? If so I have seen good results throug a mutitude of amps and as I type I can hear it being done through a fender twin, with great effect.

No. I am talking about the EJ 2000 lb violin tone.  I just can't seem to quite get there with my rig and am considering a Marshall plexi style amp.  I know a key ingredient is the Butler Tube Driver and I have one.  I am trying to get there with my old Bassman head but haven't succeeded yet.

Re: Violin Tone - Missing Link

pretty sure Eric Johnson uses Plexi Marshalls for his lead tone.

Re: Violin Tone - Missing Link

I think I have done a good job of getting the eric johnson violin tone at home using the following.

Marshall JCM-25/50 (basically a 89 jubilee)

On the clean channel bass 10, mid 6, treble 4, Pres 5, input gain 5 volume to suit.

I then use a strat with an eric johnson bridge pickup and the tone control wired to the bridge set at 5.

Pedals go wah, fuzz, octavio, screamer, tube driver, deja vibe, Hardwire Tremolo/Rotary.

On top of the the amp I have my tuner and a zvex box of the rock. Gain at 2 o'clock tone at 9o'clock volume at 10/11 o'clock (box of rock does not have numbers for the pots) boost off.

Reverb and delay in the loop.

For Eric Johnson lead I have Tube driver (gain and vol noon, EQ all off) on, box of rock on, delay and reverb on and add wah to suit.

All run through a 1x12 cab with an EVM 12-L

The box of rock really helps get a nice compressed over drive and is a great alternative to vranking your amp.

I have tried the same setup with a hot rod deluxe minus the reverb pedal, not as good as the marshall but still good.

Watch the James Santiago of Voodoo Labs video on youtube. He explains how you can get the violin tone three ways:
1. With a Marshall Plexi
2. With a clean Fender amp
3. with a channel switching amp

For a fender he recommends a tube drive + another neutral overdrive, some delay, and reverb.
