Topic: Les Paul Pickup Pole Pieces

Joe,

Do you adjust your humbucker pickup polepieces in any specific way?

I have always just left them flat but I have read a few versions - some suggesting you follow the fretboard, others that you somehow balance ouputs of each string and others that they were designed just to be flat so show be left this way.

Just wondered what your approach is...

Re: Les Paul Pickup Pole Pieces

There's no "real" noticeable difference. The original design was just for looks and a sales pitch on adjustability. Don't get me wrong, there is some voodoo involved if you want to take advantage.

I've heard the "best" way to do them his like this flathead pattern:

/ \ / \ / \

\ / \ / \ /

It's the way I've been doing them for years. turning them a half turn one way or another doesn't make a huge difference though.

Ask me about my handwound Great Lakes Guitar Pickups
Since 2010, Bonamassa fans have taken advantage of my JB friend discount = my cost + shipping. cool

smile  That's what I have at the moment.

Re: Les Paul Pickup Pole Pieces

Only way the adjustments are good is if you want to back the pickup itself off of the strings.  You could then set the pole pieces closer to the strings to give you a thinner sound.  Not sure if it works good or not but the theory is magnet further away, makes both coils far way, then have pole pieces interact more with the strings then the pickup itself.  Never tried it but makes sense in theory.
