Topic: Marshall 18 watts paired with...

Hi!
I have just finished my replica of the Marshall 1974 model (18w with Tremolo). After building several JTM45s, a plexi 50 and a plexi 100, I can say that this one is tonewise as good as its bigger brothers! Extremely dynamic and what a great crunch without making your ears bleed! I have dumped my attenuator and can use my guitar knobs a lot more!

Now guess what! I will pair it with... A homemade replica of a Fender Tweed Deluxe, in a head format! Both heads will go into an EVM12L and both speakers will be installed in a 2X12 XL cab!

Now I need to buy that Lehle Dual SGoS AB/Y pedal and I'll report what my findings are! I thought I should maybe have asked you guys what amp to pair the 18w with, so I hope you won't tell me it won't be a good pair! If you are reading this Joe, please chime in!

Thanks for reading!

Re: Marshall 18 watts paired with...

The Marshall/Fender combo works for me....I have a Silver Jubilee clone and a Fender Bandmaster Reverb...I get a great tone from the pair...

Enjoy.

Re: Marshall 18 watts paired with...

Sounds great.. the next amp I was going to build was a 2061 or a 1974

Hi,
I'm gonna buy a Marshall 1974. Can you have clean tones with that? How does it work with TS or distortion pedals?
Thank you for your answer?

Re: Marshall 18 watts paired with...

Well, yes you can have clean tones with the Marshall 1974 but keep in mind that its headroom is far below its bigger brothers. The way to achieve clean tones even with the amp turned up to 8 out of 10 is to roll your guitar volume knob down and to play softly. As soon as you dig in the crunch/lead tones are there!

I play it with a TS-like, a Fulltone FD2. I actually use it in compcut mode which is a clean boost mode. Honestly, with this amp turned up loud you don't need any pedal. I'm actually selling my FD2 and getting a ClinchFx EP+ pedal which is probably the best clean boost pedal on the market. You don't need more stuff, unless you play heavy rock/grunge... Honestly without a pedal it can go from SRV dirty cleans to ACDC lead tones...

With this amp it's pure plug and play: I have my guitar > Tuner > Wha > Clean Boost > amp! Pure tone bliss!  tongue

Thank you for the answer!!! The "Big Brother" is Marshall Bluesbreaker (JTM45)?

Re: Marshall 18 watts paired with...

By "bigger brothers" I mean all the Marshall amps that are more than 18 watts, so JTM45, plexi 50, plexi 100...
And you got a PM!  big_smile

Re: Marshall 18 watts paired with...

I just love the 1974/2061 tones... Probably my favorite tones from a Marshall...

Re: Marshall 18 watts paired with...

How do these handle modulation effects out front?

Re: Marshall 18 watts paired with...

Out front not really well, but you can put your reverb/delay in the jumper between both channels. Simple trick that works amazingly well. It's basically like an FX Loop really. I put my reverb there and it's totally great, even with the amp on 10!
