Not exactly.  A good friend of mine, a talented vascular surgeon, not only was put on the jury but they made him the foreman.  He canceled a weeks worth of cases to make $40/day.  In some cases a "foggy" jury is good but I don't think this was one of them.  Also they didn't see what we saw and had very specific rules to follow.  Hard to say what happened at this point.  It will make an interesting book to read next year...

Re: Casey Anthony

I was once sucked into jury duty and for some unknown reason wound up jury foreman. After 3 days of testimony trying to discredit the police officer involved, for simply doing his job, I must admit it was the most mind numbing, hair pulling, frustrating thing I have ever endured, for $15.00 a day. Fortunately the last time I was summoned I was going through chemo/radiation treatments for cancer and was dismissed, an even trade-off! It's unbelieveable how our justice system operates.

Doesn't the local/state law have the provision to appeal this decision ?

Unfortunately no.  What can be done is the Grandparents can take her to Civil Court and sue her for millions.  This would prevent the scoiopath from reaping any book or movie deals.  In a civil trial the prosecution doesn't have to prove beyond reasonable doubt.

We have a big story brewing here - Phone Hacking, doesn't sound serious at first glance... until you hear who the players are!! Oh yeah.

To all forum members outside the US here's a  concise report of the child Caylee's death.  Not since O.J. have I been more outraged with a verdict and in some ways this is even worse since it involves a child.

Re: Casey Anthony

Here in the UK, we had a case recently where a juror was sent to prison for discussing & making friends on fb with a defendant  involved with the case, even though she was repeatedly told not to.

Re: Casey Anthony

I heard one of the jurors report this morning that the jury was sick in having to let her walk but the evidence just wasn't sufficient to convict her and they felt they had to follow the court's instructions and consider only the evidence, especially since it was a death penalty case. Personally, I don't know what I would have done, but it is sickening that she will walk out of the jail on July 13 a free woman.

Our Florida lawmakers are now looking into making it a crime when a parent doesn't report a missing child.  Oddly enough, this will be called "Caylee's Law".  Sadly, it's too late to serve justice for little Caylee.  sad

Out here we have several laws designed to protect children from harm. None have done much good. You can't legislate human behavior. Now they are releasing child molesters and other criminals since the courts decided the prisoners don't get adequate health care. roll sad

I don't like to assume but I would imagine you would be more outraged at other verdicts and cases never even put to trial, that aren't part of the 'news' that is most accesible. It doesn't make this any less disturbing but I do wonder what you mean by our justice system being laughed at in other parts of the world.
I would be interested to learn where its better and then maybe we could work towards making ours better.
I mean as has been said there were many mistakes in this trial but that is not the whole system I don't think.
It ain't perfect but I haven't heard too many better ways.....yet.

as far as jury duty, I have served and will again when called. I was suprised at the outcome of the case I heard. I sure as hell would want  dutiful citizens on one that was deciding any case I might be involved in.

I think you misunderstood my point.  What I was refering to is the hypocrisy of claiming to have the best judicial system and then allowing something like this to happen.

Best doesn't mean perfect (we all know perfect doesn't exist), it means better than everything else.
I think Jane had a legitimate question: Where is it better?

No, It's not better as a whole anywhere else.  and really all things with a grain of salt.  Righteous indignation is a seductive velvet trap with razor jaws.  I feel it but must temper it with some reality.

What I believe, all things great & small, can't necessarily be proven.  As cold blooded as I can be about so many things, the blessings and amount of grace present in my life even now, with the 24/7 pain, only allows me to be "Holier than thou" for exactly 23 minutes.

Reality is;  horrors like this happen daily, in every corner of the globe.  I could choke on it.  It ain't me.  It is a chain of never ending dysfunction, if unbroken.  The Divine Ms Tia & I have broken that chain by the great spirit and A LOT OF WORK.  We're grown and will not repeat the worst mistakes.

I think the whole Anthony family should be neutered, but dwelling on that would give me an excuse not to heal myself.  I got my own problems.  Saved by much

Jeff,
I have to admit to being a bit put off by all of the criticism of our judicial system and the jury.
I understand all the emotions. I think she did it and I think OJ did it too.
But let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater. Our system, while not perfect, is better than most (all?). No system is going to be 100% correct and ours is based on our citizens being
innocent until proven guilty. It sucks when someone is guilty and it cannot be proven, but that
seems preferrable to convicting/executing someone who is innocent.

I am no bleeding heart either. If she was found guilty, I would have gladly volunteered to throw the switch.
