Topic: Sustain trick?

So I was watching this video the other day and I was wandering what John does at around 5:04... he's holding the neck, but I don't know why. Does anyone know if this is some sort of trick to get more sustain or feedback or something?

Re: Sustain trick?

Looks like he is just muting some strings.

Re: Sustain trick?

Agree with Wharris.  Steve Vai does the same thing and then shreds all over the neck with his left hand..

Re: Sustain trick?

It looks cooler doing it that way than just resting your right hand at the bridge!

Re: Sustain trick?

Apologies if you're already familiar with this:....... hold a note, mute the other strings and then gently rest the tip of the headstock of your guitar on the edge of your speaker cab. At gig volume you can have infinite sustain.....providing you know how to control it. Probably looks really crap from the audience's perspective though big_smile

never give up, never slow down
never grow old, never ever die young
