Topic: Marshall Class 5

Playing it right now, thinking about buying it. It sounds great with my Gretsch and absolutely divine with my Ibanez Artcore semihollowbody, and the Strats sound really awesome too. The only thing I'm having a problem with is the highs on the Strat are just a little too bright. The whole amp is really bright, I have the treble on zero, which really helps everything else. What do you guys think? For the record, I'm running a tubescreamer and a wah on the thing, and I'm running a delay/echo pedal for saturation that's just about cleared most of the problem up, but just needs one more tweak.

And for the record, playing Strats is just not an option. I love those guitars too much. smile

Re: Marshall Class 5

Well, I know there are differing opinions on the Class 5, but I am very happy with mine. No problems with pedals and I don't mind the controls, since my old Sunn has the same setup except that it has a "contrast" control!

I suppose one could look at changing the speaker down the road or running it through a different cab to alter the sound somewhat, but after the speaker breaks in a bit, it sounds great. At least to my admittedly somewhat deaf ears (too much live music in the distant past I guess). smile

If you like it, go for it!

It is what it is...  It's a great amp, but I'd say if you're not 100% into it, then maybe sleep on it and try it again a few days later.  I find it brighter with my strats too, tone knob back helps but truth be told I really like this amp with my LP and SG better.  -S

Re: Marshall Class 5

I wasn't crazy about mine at first, but it has grown on me in a huge way. I have an R-8 that loves this amp. It is amazing the tone I get out of it with this particular guitar. Great for strumming and learning songs in the bed room, and I have even used it at practice a couple of times, however I was really pushing the envelope. I love mine and would give it a hearty thumbs up. I wish they made this in a 12 watt version.

Guys in the UK -
Check this man out - I bought a custom amp off him....really superb.

He mods lots of amps that sound good, but need the extra push over the cliff.

NO BAD reviews.

Re: Marshall Class 5

Deezer I'm assuming you are talking about the combo and not the head version thats out now. Your comments about it being a brite amp are surprising as the common knock if any on the Class 5 combo is it's a little dark. I have a new Class 5 head on the way and I can't wait to get it!

Re: Marshall Class 5

In my opinion of playing my brother's Class 5... the 10" doesn't do it justice.

Put it through a 1x12, 2x12 or 4x12, and the brightness will get a little more meat. Low end will be more full too.

*ALSO.... playing it by itself, in the store or just practicing... it sounds great. In a band setting or rehearsal... it just doesn't have enough to cut through the mix... even through a 4x12 cab.

Re: Marshall Class 5

After playing it for a few days, I've decided that it's pretty cool, but not enough to make me stop playing my Fender. At least not now. But still a pretty cool amp.
