Topic: Happy Independence Day

Enjoy the long weekend fellow Americans, break out the flag and fly it high and stay safe. I'm revving up the old smoker for a couple of pork loins slathered in pineapple mango jam and secret rub. Then we hunker down for the onslaught as a half million folks all try to come to the beach at the same time. If you aren't set up by 9 AM, forget about it.

Re: Happy Independence Day

Hunker down is right Rick! I used to go to Lake Tahoe or Clearlake for the 4th, but as of late I stick close to home. It gets crowded enough here in my little town of Benicia w/ a parade on the 3rd in the evening and a fireworks display courtesy of Valero Oil on the 4th. Remember Bonabuds, if you go to a picnic or party and drink like a fish.....SWIM home, don't drive! Be safe and have a Happy Independence Day!

Re: Happy Independence Day

Hahaha...sounds like Crystal Lake Rick. I learned soon after moving here that people went to the beach early in the morning, set up chairs and blankets to save their spots, then left and came back at 6 or 7 PM for the sunset and fireworks show.
Many times tempted to grab stuff and toss it in the nearest garbage can, but it was the accepted norm.

Hope everyone has a happy, safe July 4th weekend! To my friends outside the states...I'll drink a couple cold ones in your honor.

Have a safe and sane Independence Day to all the US forum members and their families.  Cheers to all the rest as you watch us Yanks eat, drink and explode fireworks over our cities.

Fun Fact;
Did you know the first firework display was encouraged by congress and took place in Philidelphia on July 4, 1777.

Re: Happy Independence Day

Yup! Breaking out the smoker here on Monday - about 12 lbs. of pork ribs and about 5 lbs. of marinated chicken thighs.
My son is home on leave from the Navy - Jane and I took him to the York & Leicester field days last night for the fireworks. I'm telling yas, for small town America, what an OUTSTANDING display! It went on for probably 45 minutes. They had to blow off close to $20K woth of stuff. One of the best I've ever seen. That said, I'm feeling for you Rick, what with the tree huggers shutting down the San Diego fireworks and all. If stupid was a crime, half of the people in the world would be in prison. 'nuff said.
Happy Independance Day!

I'd say don't get me started RICjunkie, oh you just did. Here, after two years of environmental studies at Sea World on their fireworks there was zip for E damage, but that makes no difference. The lawyers know all they have to do is appeal up the line until they get to the Ninth Circuit and the lap dogs will deliver the proper ruling. As they say, take 'em all out and shoot them. They are going after all the 'works too, even sparklers and ladyfingers for the kiddies. Sigh... Speaking of shooting, a recent study in prisons found the word is out. Homes that fly American flags have residents with an 80% chance of being armed and ready to take on all comers. Burglars know to try another place. Hoist that Stars and Stripes and keep it up. I recommend a choked .410 or 20 gauge. Won't kill the neighbors with rounds through the walls. wink
Love the smell of hardwood smoke in the morning...

Hey J Dawg.....thanks for noticing.  I didn't.  Technically my forum BD would have been sometime last month but I was born again due to the big crash last year.

But you can bet I will be doing a bit of partying this weekend. Throw some burgers on the bar b que and throw back a few beers and watch the local fireworks show.

Excellent tip Rick!  I was wonderin' what secret rub you're gonna be using.  I'll be away from home the next few days for a junior golf tournament in the Indiana resort town of French Lick.  The course was designed by Donald Ross and hosted a PGA Championship in the 20's won by Walter Hagen.  The city's famous for its sulfer springs and gambling casino in West Baden.  Oh, and Larry Bird is from there.

Here's a vid of the history of the casino in West Baden Springs.  Its history is similar to the Hotel Del in San Diego.  I think some of you might enjoy this as it's hard to believe there's something this beautiful in southern Indiana.

Re: Happy Independence Day

Well, I'll have to fess up that the secret rub is home made by Senor Curby himself. It is the bomb. He should go into business! That place looks fabulous Curby. I can see why it would remind you of the Hotel Del Coronado. Just add ocean.

Re: Happy Independence Day

The chicken is now swimming in honey mustard marinade. Tonight is the "Ring of Fire". The property owners along the shore of Conesus Lake all build bonfires. It seems everyone has some fireworks as well. The lake is about 8 miles long and about 1 mile wide. That's a lot of bonfires! smile

Here is the end product of the smoker. Firecracker Pork Loins. Sweet and spicy with an oakey smokey flavor. I did it a day ahead to avoid cooking on the busy day tomorrow. https://picasaweb.google.com/Elexmage/F … 3735955355
Happy firecracker day and keep the flag flying.

Re: Happy Independence Day

Here in "Big D" we can still have fireworks even though most of Texas is on a burn ban & a drought. My Daddy lives out in West Texas & says the only thing left to burn is the dirt....

But on a happier note, the pool water is ONLY 92 degrees and I have been floating in it all weekend and my dear Hubby has just put beef tenderloin swaddled in bacon on the grill! And I've opened the last bottle of Tempranillo from one of my employers (a Frenchman that makes wonderful wines from Texas grown grapes).

Tomorrow is pork ribs with a chipotle orange glaze and mango salsa. I have yet to decide on the wine....

Our flag in proudly flying! We are watching vintage airplanes flying over the house and waiting for fireworks today & tomorrow.

Re: Happy Independence Day

Happy Independence Day ye'all. You know my father's birthday is today. The whole US celebrates his birthday.

Re: Happy Independence Day

Sounds like you're all talking a foreign language to me but wish you all the best on that side of the pond for a Happy Independence Day. Pool water of 92 degrees? Phew, that's a scorcher, as we would say!

Rick, I can smell those oakey smokey loins from here. wink Hmmmmm Hmmmmmm. big_smile
