Topic: Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area and my return to civilization

As some of you know, I have taken numerous trips into the Minnesota/Canadian wilderness. The US side is the Boundary Waters Wilderness Area and the Canadian side is Quetico Provincial Park. It's been a few years since my last trip (a couple of weddings got in the way), but last week I returned to the BWCA with my daughter Jamie, her husband Caleb and their Jack Russell Terrier (Penny).
I mentioned my return to civilization in another topic, which was met with a landslide of requests (two) for pictures.
These are chronological and the first photos were taken as we headed through Duluth. Our entry point was from the Echo Trail and we traveled over 12 miles our first day. We saw moose, bald eagles, loons, turtles (including one that laid her eggs right in our campsite), various ducks, mink, deer, woodpeckers, and a pretty wide variety of other birds. We crossed numerous beaver dams and portaged well over 12 miles during the cocurse of our trip. I have not had a chance to edit/delete any photos, so you're seeing every photo we took. So, without further ado, here you go:

Nice pics. I haven't been up to the BWCA in a few years, I need to get back to it soon.

Re: Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area and my return to civilization

I only had time for the first 30 or so. Fantastic area. We have nothing like that out west where most of our wilderness is pretty vertical and involves strenuous hiking at high altitude.

Really enjoyed the pics Bill, especially this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/billsta14/ … 6999782572 It almost appears that you're saying, "I've been out here a little too long!" lol Looks like the four of you really had a great time! My turn next... wink

Hey Bill, there's one other picture that I'm a bit concerned with, it's this one: http://www.flickr.com/photos/billsta14/ … 999782572/

I don't want to jump to conclusions, but this could be a sign of Lyme Disease on Penny. I'd suggest that maybe you should have Jamie and Caleb take her to a Vet.

Here's more info on the disease: http://www.lymediseaseblog.com/lyme-disease-symptoms/

Roy, somehow I knew this was the picture you were talking about...even before I looked.
Our fourth person cancelled the week before we left, so I paddled solo for most of the trip. Jamie and Caleb were about 50 yards away and I decided I'd take my own picture...of course they saw and immediately started making fun of me. They had me laughing so hard I wound up looking a bit maniacal! Or I may have just been out in the woods too long.

Gee Bill - I could have been your fourth but would probably have been too busy taking pictures so you would still be paddling by yourself!  And I don't like to eat fish.  And where would I charge my batteries for the camera?  Never mind....

Looks like a beautiful trip - my hats off to you guys for roughing it like this.

Bill, if you hold the fish real close to the camera, it looks a lot bigger! wink
Fantastic trip!!!

Rick, you'll notice the old guy's arm (me) is fully extended while the youngsters haven't yet learned that trick. I won't tell 'em if you won't!

Rocket,
I had not culled the photos when I posted them here, so I went back and made another folder where I placed select photos to get rid of duplicates, poor shots (not too many of those) and reduced from over 500 down to about 200 or so.
I then made the original link private and made the new folder public.
I screwed something up, because I just looked at the new folder and there was only one pic in there. Damn!
Back to the drawing board. In the meantime, I have reactivated the link above.

Re: Boundary Waters Canoe Wilderness Area and my return to civilization

Wonderful pictures Bill. It reawakened the wilderness itch in me for sure now. It's been too long since I crawled through some willows and dropped a nightcrawler in the lazy current to wash under the cut bank. Irresistable to those home guard brown trout. Time to think about a week or two in the High Sierra in the fall. No tourists or kiddies, flaming gold aspens and cold enough at night to have killed off the mosquitos. My rod and two miles of stream to myself at dawn. A walk back up to the campsite with crispy trout fried in bacon grease and campfire boiled coffee for breakfast.  Heaven!

It seems like the only place that I can really "get away from it all". There's just something special about no news from the outside world, no cell coverage, no alarm clocks...
