Topic: question about class 5 mod

Hello everyone. I am wondering if anyone has tried to put a lower pre amp tube in the class 5 amp to get some more head room and allow a cleaner sound?  Thinking about doing this and letting my tube screamer provide alot of the distortion. I have a black heart 1x12 cab and would like to make this mod.  What do you all think??

While I haven't done this to my Class 5, I've done it to a 5 watt amp I built and it does work. I'd put a 12AT7 in the V1 position and try it. You'll probably find you'll get a bit more clean headroom. YMMV. You may or may not like the tone. Use your ears, decide for yourself. smile
