Topic: Joe's Epi LP and Hello:)

Hi all,
Really big fan of Joe's for a while now and loving the new album! A bit of a late starter but I think what made me really take notice was his performance on Jools Holland. It was incredible!

I actually felt a bit bad for the other acts as he woke everyone up and blew them away. I haven't seen a performance like it since and it still amazes me. So off I went to itunes and worked my way through the albums, then found the RAH dvd. The man's a genius, no question. It's made me search for new artists a lot more now as there must be a lot of great (proper) music that's hidden away. Thank goodness I watched that episode of Later anyway:)

Well, I pre-ordered Joe's Epi in the UK (first time I've ever pre-ordered actually!) and can't wait for the email to say it's on its way. Money's a bit tight at the mo (a Gibson would be out of the question for me) but am chuffed to bits I'm getting a Bonamassa Gold top! I saw the vintage

Welcome to the forum Neeley1982, and congrats on your upcoming JP Epi.  I think the anti spam bot chopped off the rest of your message, but I can understand your excitement.  Enjoy your LP when it gets there! smile

Thanks for the welcome Devan, I was wondering what happened there:) lol

I basically said I was saving up for the vintage "inspired" goldtop and was chuffed to bits when the authorised Epi was announced. I have an Epi LP standard and mine plays really well.
With all the extras added onto the Bonamassa model I think it's really good value. Knowing Joe's had input on it makes it a keeper for sure. I can't wait!

Hey Redeye9,
thanks for the welcome:)

They sold out the pre-orders weeks ago (I got mine ordered the day before they sold out!), I haven't looked since actually. The place I have my order in emails every couple of weeks to keep informed, all I want is a delivery date lol

Devan I listened to your clips in that Axe thread - nice playing man! Have you compared the axe to a GSP1101? I really like my GSP, just wondering how much of a jump in quality it is to the axe? Does it feel different?

Thanks for the feedback on that clip!  It's a fun exercise that I am enjoying.  So great to hear constructive criticism from other guitarists on improving my tone and playing.

As for the GSP1101 I really honestly couldn't tell you, as I have never ever used that unit.  The only other 'modeller' I used before the Axe-FX was Amplitube 3 on my Mac, which is purely a software modeller.

I thought that Amplitube was great until I tried the Axe-FX.  I think the biggest differentiator that most people speak about with the Axe-FX is the 'feel'.  It really FEELS like playing a tube amp, with a lot more space and resonance in the tone.  I've A/B'd Amplitube and the Axe-FX through my powered monitor and whilst Amplitube sounds perfectly fine, there is a noticeable flatness to it that makes soloing a lot more harder work than it should be.

With the Axe-FX, the notes hit you deeply, you can feel the air moving and you get inspired to play a lot more.

It all comes down to your own personal preference and playing style though.  I know people who love the POD HD500 over the Axe-FX, which is fine.  It has everything to do with that perfect tone in your head and which device can give it to you and make you feel like you never want to put the guitar down... smile

Re: Joe's Epi LP and Hello:)

It does sound very good. I might try a few patches on my GSP for a laugh and post later on:) The GSP doesn't sound as good, I can hear that. I know exactly what you mean about the 'feel', I have a DSL50 and can crank that through my Marshall 4x12 greenbacks (as I live out in the country hehe) and can feel the difference. And you're right about that it does make you play differently when there's dynamics. I seem to play better with the head/cab so that's probably it...

Your clips sound great though. Looking forward to hearing more and really like your playing and tones. I always enjoy working out some of Joe's solos and riffs, although some of them I really have to slow down! I really like the kind of "out of the box" playing that makes the solos more interesting. Do you make your own backing tracks?

Thanks for the kind words again.  I've been spending a lot of time lately trying to work out Joe's style of playing, especially his very melodic Myxolydian runs.  There are some great YouTube lesson videos by some of the other members here available.

I also use Transcribe! a lot on my Mac to slow down and dissect Joe's playing.  But I fear I will need to practice 10 hours a day for the next 75 years to get close to his skill level... big_smile

I've created a couple of backing tracks, namely 'Sloe Gin' and 'Stop!', which are both on my SoundCloud page (which you will see if you follow the Axe-FX clip you mentioned).  The Axe-FX clip itself was played to a 'So Many Roads' backing track which was NOT mine, but I believe from an English guitar magazine that did a JB lesson last year.  Either 'Guitarist' magazine or 'Guitar Techniques'...

All of these backing tracks (including mine) are available at guitarbackingtrack.com ... smile
