Topic: JB Tone Quest

Calling all you gear heads and tone masters out there - I am working on trying to nail Joe's guitar that he had on 'So Many Roads' on his 'Live From Nowhere In Particular' album.

I recorded a short snippet where I was playing his signature Custom Shop Les Paul (bridge pickup) via an Axe-FX Ultra using the Carol Ann OD2r amp emulation.  Also had a Tube Screamer emulation in front of the amp, and played through a 4x12 cabinet emulation with Ownhammer EV12L impulses.

I would appreciate some feedback on how to tweak this tone to get a bit closer to his live tone.  Also, I am not sure if this setting will cut through the mix in a 'real' live situation.  Hoping that some more experienced tone hounds can pass on their knowledge.

Thanks!

EDIT: Take #2 with some variations in EQ settings, plus addition of Reverb and Tremolo.  Actually, the chap who builds one of Joe's amps was kind enough to give me some tips on TGP about adding Tremolo and making delay changes to the preset.  Also, he explained a bit more about Joe's vibrato style, which I have tried to emulate here with poor results IMO

Re: JB Tone Quest

Can the Axe-FX simulate multiple amps running together?

Yes, it can do two amps/cabs at the same time.  However my preset only had the CA.  Should I add a Marshall into the mix perhaps?

Re: JB Tone Quest

Sounds pretty good.  I've noodled around with almost the exact same thing, same song on my standard Axe-fx.  One thing I have is reverb "pedal" at the end set at MD Room.  It was a while ago, but I believe I just copied it from one of the presets. I also have an EQ in the "path".  This could help tweak things (until you go insane big_smile).  You can run parallel amps, though for now I just have the OD2r, but I've messed with one of the Marsha amps.  I have a 4X12 75w, I might be mistaken, but I don't think I can do a 4x12 w/ EV12L.

How are you capturing your recording?

Thanks for sharing.
Jim

Re: JB Tone Quest

I think that sounded good!  I'd add a little reverb and call it a day.  Nice job.

Re: JB Tone Quest

Sounds really good.  That's the first time I've heard that Axe Fx not sound sterile.....nice!

Re: JB Tone Quest

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!  Appreciated! smile

I will try the extra Reverb that a couple of you have mentioned.  I have quite a bit of delay slapback on the preset, which is really not apparent in the clip, but I will try and add Reverb to see if it will open up the sound a bit more.

I am really trying to capture Joe's "Gritty yet still sweet" sound that he gets from his rig.

Jim - You may be right about the EV12L's not being available in the 4x12 emulation.  I am using the Ownhammer custom IR's which I uploaded to the device a while back, and unfortunately, the Axe-FX doesn't keep the names of the custom IR's in it's memory banks, so I will have to go back and see if I can find the original upload folder to get the exact IR names.

The recording was Axe-FX direct to Garageband, via my Apogee Duet interface.  (Axe-FX is plugged into the XLR ports on the Duet).

Re: JB Tone Quest

Nice playing Devan.

It sounds good, but to my ears still lacks a little somethin' (apart from reverb). Maybe it's too clean, needs the grit of the Jubilee to flesh it out, maybe.

Still it's a great tone from a modeller.

Devan,

Can you provide a link to the discussion on TPG?

The stuff there goes by so fast I tend to loose track.

Thanks and keep up the solid work.  Nicely done!

Hey nevermind - I found it first time out. smile

it's pretty cool at that the Carol-Ann Amp folks are helping out.

I also liked his note about Joe's vibrato.
