Topic: Great Delay Shoot Out!! including a Pete Cornish TES

Lads and ladettes,

I spent an awesome day in the studio back to backing a load of boutique delays with Dan from Gigrig

Present and correct were:

MXR System II
TES
Skryds DDL
Providence Chrono
El Capistan
TC2290
HIWATT Tape delay

It was very revealing. None were in anyway bad- all had different characteristics. Feel free to comment

Amps were Lazy J 80 w head and cab, 1963 AC30 TB

Guitars 1963 strat, Gilmour Strat, 1957 Les Paul Junior.

Heavenly!

Really want to try an El Capistan sometime soon.

Really? It's the one I like least as it happens. I thought the TES for the rockier stuff won hands down, and for the slap back, I'd take the Hiwatt.

I found the El Cap very muddy on repeats.

Haha, this is odd...I said this on his fb page - I like the Strymon the best...

So many others (and this may just be the audio on the video) sounded harsh and 'fragile' - was disappointed in hearing the Skrydstrup for how much it goes for...did not appeal to me.
On that video, the Cornish sounded way too dull and muddy...it worked the best all round in clean and distorted and you could tell the quality, but for the price of one...hmm...I'm aiming to get the El Cap.
Props for the TC...that thing still kills.

Wow, that is quite a selection of delays.  My preference after watching the clip was the Cornish TES.  It sounded more natural to me.  My least favorite was the Providence.  I am sure the price is steep on all of these units.  That being said, I am pretty content with my Keeley DD-3 and even my Boss DD-7.  But, I am sure these delays sound even better in person.  Thanks for posting a great shoot out.

I like the way you went about doing this comparison more than anything!  Very nice using a recorded sample so that each delay had an identical guitar part to work with.  I really can't pick a favorite because depending on what riff you were playing and the tone, a different delay pedal sounded the best to me each time.  Thanks for posting this, very cool!  -Seth

the el Cap is awesome

Great to hear so many thoughts- I think they are all great in differing ways and all have something to offer. The DDL was a let down though.

Great, thorough shoot out!  Well done!

But I am going to echo some of the others in thinking that the El Cap and the Cornish sounded the best.  I like the warmth of their sound.

However, I could just be biased, seeing as I own an El Cap... big_smile
