Whats your amp and guitar mate?

Re: Suggestion on pedals..

Bit high level of a question, like sted implies, depends on what your running...

However some of my favorites are at the moment:
A bit of grit to full on gain, Fulltone OCD
Round off highs and low, boost and add some grit, Analogman Modded TS-808
Add some punch and grit, Way Huge Pork Loin
Great all around boost, Lizard Leg Flying Dragon
Full on retro flavored assault, Analogman Sunface NKT-275

Re: Suggestion on pedals..

I prefer to use a Compressor for solos.  Always have.. I have an MXR custom comp, and also a pigtronix philosophers tone.  The pigtronix one is awesome.. adds some grit too if you want.  Or if I want a fuzz boost, I kick in a London Fuzz or Catalyst.  My 808 stays on all the time.

For boosting, there pretty much is only a Compressor, Tube screamer, or a regular boost pedal but with that you only get volume, no difference in tone..  Or a Fuzz pedal works too. There's a ton of each of them out there and they all do pretty much the same thing.  I wouldn't make it consume your life finding the "right one".  Just try a few and see what you like.  -S

Whats your amp and guitar mate?

By the way I am using Blues Jr AMP all stock.

Re: Suggestion on pedals..

I would recommend a Fulltone OCD for giving your Blues Jr. a thick Marshall crunch.(Try to find a used Version 3.)  But you will also need a tubescreamer type pedal to hit your OCD with for some good lead tones.  Does a Blues Jr. have reverb?  If not a reverb pedal for some ambiance would really sweeten things up.

Thanks for all your help guys..

Yes.  Whats he's saying is to use the OCD for your main tone.  In other words, keep it on all the time and then have a tube screamer next to it in the chain to kick on just for solos.  It will give you a good mid boost to stand out in the mix better.

If you're already getting a good thick distortion with your amp, you can then just use 1 single tube screamer type overdrive pedal to kick on for leads.  But stay away from flat out distortion pedals to try and use before of an already dirty amp as it may not sound too good.  The point of the OD is to boost your original tone and compliment it rather than change it all together like a distortion box will do.

Re: Suggestion on pedals..

Depends what you want really, the oldest trick in the book is to use a tubescreamer as a lead boost (Level all the way up, gain all the way down) which pushes your pre-amp a bit harder also boosting the mids and cutting the lows. If you just want to have a clean boost for some lead parts then I cant say enough about the Bob Burt clean Boost, in fact any of the Bob burt stuff is worth a look.
Im using an analogman king of tone at present and its a pretty special pedal, although I've noticed you need to pump the volume as well as the drive on that thing for good results, I've also recently scored a Dirty Boy Ball Buster, possibly one of the most outrageous pedals I've ever used but for pushing an already overdriven amp into the stratosphere Ive never used anything else like it, truly unique.

Just set to taste mate, I suppose you can use it to brighten/darken the sound a bit if you have a bridge single coil or something that might be a bit harsh/flubby but I dont think its really that powerful for tone shaping, I've mostly left it at noon and use my amp EQ to get the sound right.

By the way Visual Sound do a great TS808 clone that has a bass boost on it if you dont like the low end cut of a traditional tubescreamer.

Re: Suggestion on pedals..

I would suggest if you want a very focussed OD then go for a Pork Loin, however a great all round OD is the Blackstar HT Dual, with a little dialing you get a great Marshall drive that's very focussed in the mids. Plus it has a valve so the drive reacts with your vol. knob very well!

Tokai LS100Q Lemon Drop
PRS Singlecut

Line 6 PODxt

Re: Suggestion on pedals..

Just want an edgey solo tone prehaps to get away from clean or broken up tone you get straight from on Blues Jr......I would buy direct from Fulltone website from their "Blemishes Products" a Fulltone Fulldrive II or as mentioned a Fulltone OCD (has more overdrive).  Either or is great pedal - prehaps OCD would be more versatile.

Simple, spend about $140.00 and you're done....solo away.

I have a Blues Jr. NOS Tweed that I use for Open Blues Jams.  You can get some decent overdrive just from the amp itself if you turn the volume all the way up and then work with the master volume, or even your guitar's volume knob (as Joe would urge you to do.)

I've used the amp with a Stratocaster, Music Man, and a Les Paul.  Obviously, the humbuckers are going to drive the amp more than the single coils.

For boost/gain, I have an Xotic AC+.  This is a two channel overdrive that has a clean boost that can supply some grit, and a second channel that can really burn.  If you combine the heavier channel with the amps natural overdrive, you can get some pretty thick gain.  I also have a fuzz pedal that just sounds amazing.

The Blues Jr. has a really nice spring reverb.  It isn't tube driven, but its still really nice.  I keep mine set at about 3.

Re: Suggestion on pedals..

I just bought a pork loin and a boss RV5 reverb...great pedals!
