First gate of the Morganza Spillway opened today.  One to two more to be opened tomorrow.

Each gate allows about 10,000 cubic feet per second or about 75,000 gallons per second to flow into the spillway.

Fairly impressive video on the opening of the gate:

Don't you know they're praying in Morgan City that the water doesn't top their flood wall like it did the last time! sad

I watched an interview with the General from the Corps of Engineers and he said that their calcualtions was that the water woudl be about 10 ft below the top of Morgan City's flood walls.  Time will tell

Re: New Mother Nature

Our turn - yesterday Massachusetts had at least four tornados.  Considering we have on average 3 a year at most this was pretty unusual.  Lucky for me they were all in the western part of the state (about 100 miles for me) so no damage where I am, but watching the coverage on TV and seeing places that I have been before damaged or destroyed is pretty strange.  I know the venue Joe played in last November was right in the middle of one of them but I haven't been able to find out yet how damaged that beautiful venue was, and I think the place I have been going to for apple picking since my kids were little (over 20 years) may now be nothing but a pleasant memory.  Kind of brings it all home.

Mother Nature needs to take a vacation for awhile.

Re: New Mother Nature

Since all of us normally never mention the weather unless it's to complain about it, I thought it only fair - for once - to give a big shout out to Mother Nature for treating north-west Europe to a stunning week of Indian summer!  cool

Holland officially had the wettest summer since records began in 1906! It was just miserable, weeks of grayness and drizzle.....today was just stunning, not a cloud to be seen all afternoon and temperatures over 20 (70+). I see from the Beeb weather page that UK temps are even higher than ours. They say that we're getting four more days like this before things return to 'normal' next week. Wow.  cool

I may have to take Cathy to a beach on Friday.  tongue

North west UK just the same. Wall to wall blue sky 25c (about 80f in proper old money). Can't believe it. Nothing but wet all year and miserable.

Well, there's another myth just flown out the window......Thought it was just us Brits who talked (whinged, moaned, griped) about the weather.

Hope it's getting better for you Curby, must be playing havoc with the lad's golf. Sorry to report but over here after another misty start we're in for another day of mid 70s sunshine. The down side is that wasps are getting very confused and cheesed off.

Suppose we'll pay for it later in the month, forcasters last week were predicting snow in October. If it's like their predicition of a "barbecue summer" that'll mean shorts until Halloween.

What's got the WASPs cheesed off? A shortage of sunscreen? One would think Irish Catholics would be ticked off too!!! LOL! We're getting early traces of rain in NorCal which is putting the grape harvest into high gear. A little rain won't effect the "new mother nature" harvest, however aggressive law enforcement might.

Re: New Mother Nature

well it's started earlier than usual this year, but further to the north. Must be more global warming, we didn't really have a "winter" as such here. April 27 will mark the one year anniversary of the devastating tornado outbreak in Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia. Many people and communities are still trying to recover/rebuild from that. I take it very seriously now when they set us up for a "Torcon" alert, thank God the sirens are right down the street from me. When they go off in the middle of the night nobody's sleeping through it.

I'll take our quakes. Keep your fingers crossed Tres. A buster front just headed east after dumping a foot of snow yikes in the local mountains with high winds and hail on the coast.

Re: New Mother Nature

Woke up to sirens and tornados this morning.  Missed my part of town, but did some damage in nearby Newburgh.  To the west in Harrisburg, Illinois there were some fatalities.  This has been the mildest winter I can remember.  I think it's gonna be near eighty friday that'll spin off some more dangerous winds.

Re: New Mother Nature

got another round coming today they say will be worse than earlier this week. Be on the lookout Scott, you are kind of in the crosshairs. We are under a Torcon 5 or 6, directly north of here including Nashville,TN is a Torcon 8. That is an extremely high number for this time of year. All the schools here are dismissing at noon today. Hoping I can get home from work before the really bad stuff hits.

first one is already on the ground just north of Huntsville,AL, many more to come I fear. This could be one of those epic outbreaks like last April. roll

Re: New Mother Nature

Yes Tres, very nasty weather with multiple tornadoes, tennis ball sized hail and flash flooding.  Kids are in lockdown at school till all clear.  The tornadoes are in Kentucky at present.
